If you love your vino like we do, you probably already know that we have some really great local wine stores scattered throughout the Fraser Valley. We’re thrilled to introduce you to one of them this week!
Frank Valente worked for the BC Liquor Board for more than a decade. In 2002, when liquor stores had become privatized, Frank decided to purchase an existing wine store and open Wine Emporium with his wife Marlene. What makes Wine Emporium unique? They exclusively feature BC VQA wines, from over 50 different wineries!
Their selection of award-winning favourites, late harvest and dessert wines are all from our wonderful province! Dirty Laundry, Road 13, Black Hills Estate, Tantalus, Cedar Creek, Chandra and vintages for every budget from many other great large and small/boutique BC wineries. Delicious selections from Fraser Valley locals such as Township 7 and Domaine de Chaberton are available at Wine Emporium as well.
Ever find yourself roaming the aisles of the liquor store, wondering which of those hundreds of bottles would go best with your holiday turkey or ham? We asked Frank for a few recommendations to help our readers serve a winning combo of food and drink this season. For turkey or ham, Frank suggests a Riesling, Pinot Gris or Rose selection. “What if they don’t like white wine?” we asked… because, you know, we’re here for you red-wine-only folks! He says a Gamay Noir is a great choice for those who prefer red. Two of his present favourite Gamay Noirs are from Mt. Boucherie and Desert Hills.
A bottle of fine wine (maybe presented with some chocolate wine goblets from these folks) is always an excellent gift during the holidays. One can never have enough holiday cheer! Frank recommends a Vinturi Wine Aerator as a fabulous gift idea for the wine lover on your list. The Vinturi Wine Aerator is this year’s hot wine gift; it enhances the flavour and gives wine a longer, smoother finish. Wine Emporium carries some other fabulous wine accessories, gift bags and stemware to enhance your wine selections!
Another great gift for your holiday hostess, wine lover, yourself (ha ha) is a bottle of ice wine or late harvest dessert wine. Paradise Ranch Pinot Blanc/Riesling or Merlot Late Harvest, or a Riesling ice wine from Gehringer Brothers are Frank’s recommendations.
No matter what you’re serving or who you’re shopping for this season, or anytime, the Valentes and their knowledgeable team at Wine Emporium will happily help with your selections. The staff is super friendly, non-pretentious and truly helpful. In conversation we mentioned that “we’re no experts”. Frank says that everybody is their own expert – you all know what pleases your own palette, and that’s what it’s all about. Cheers to that!
