Spotlight: Peggi’s Donair 02.28.11

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Congratulations to Elisa and Willetta! This contest is now closed.

After relocating from their downtown Chilliwack location almost two years ago, Peggi’s Donair has been serving up delicious East Coast style donairs on Vedder Road ever since. With the colorful mural on the outside of the building that depicts a mix of West Coast and East Coast lifestyles, you can’t miss it!

Peggi’s Donair is family owned and operated by Peggi and her daughter Jessie (one of the four Jessies). With a background in home care, Peggi has lived in BC since 1989 and always loved this type of food that reminded her of her Nova Scotia home. She came across the opportunity to purchase a donair business in 2005 and from the time the idea had formed and actually came to be, a mere six days had passed. How’s that for answering opportunity’s knock?

Although donairs originated from the middle east, they have become popular in many cities around the world, including our Fraser Valley, and we can understand why. Peggi’s donairs are made in pita pockets that are first steamed open. After adding vegetables, sauce, and meat, the flavors mingle within the contained pocket to deliver a delicious mouthful of donair goodness.

The beef, chicken and lamb (available Thurs/Sun only) are seasoned and skewered, then cooked on a rotisserie that slowly cooks the outside of the meat, drawing the flavor out, without drying it. As each layer of meat is thinly shaved off for your donair, the rotisserie continues to cook the meat to the middle. The fat drips to the bottom, leaving you with flavorful, tender meat.

You can build your own donair or purchase their pre-made specialties, such as the Greek, Caribbean or newly popular Taco style. Peggi makes two of their sauces, the Halifax Sweet sauce (delish!) and Tzatziki on site. All of their vegetables are prepared fresh and purchased frequently to deliver great flavor.

With a motto like “All taxes, toppings & love, included”, you really can’t go wrong with a stop at Peggi’s Donair. Between Peggi, her daughter and the staff they employ who come to work with a smile on their faces, you are sure to experience a warm welcome and leave with a full belly.

  21. Koreen says:

The last time I had a Donair was in the Middle East – almost 10 years ago. The mall food court type donairs don’t look appealling. I have never heard of Peggi’s before, looks like THE place to have a good Canadian donair!

  22. Karen says:

My daughter was just asking about that place. We drive by it very often as we are going on an adventure to one beautiful place or another in mountains of Chilliwack, she had noticed it along the way many times and asked last week “What’s a Donair”.
My mom is from Nova Scotia and as I was growing up every visit to Nova Scotia was not complete with out a stop in for a Donair.
I look forward to stopping in on our way out for our next adventure…. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did when I was younger.

  23. Elisa Wagner says:

I live in Abbotsford and love donairs, used to go to a place in Vancouver, would love to try the one in Chiliwack. I look forward to trying these delicious treats. Hope to be at Peggi’s soon.

  25. Rhonda says:

    Hello ladies…
I am so glad to see some tastes of home out here on the westcoast.
I am originally from Nova Scotia and came to Bc in 2001. I will be sure
to visit this family business and although I live in Langley it will be
worth the drive to Chilliwak…..in fact…so much closer than a drive home
to Nova Scotia. I wish you all the success in your entrepreneurial venture.
I will post again once I sample the restaurant…..GO LADIES GO!

  26. Erin says:

Mmmm sounds yummy! Def going to check out this place. Thanks for sharing!
