Spotlight: October 25, 2010 – Memory Castings

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Some people are just so incredibly talented, aren’t they?! The Fraser Valley is loaded with outstanding artisans, artists, creative entrepreneurs… we love discovering new ones!

We recently learned of a fabulous local artisan who creates commissioned lifecasting heirlooms. They are amazing. A perfect anytime, holiday or special occasion gift, Memory Castings creates an identical sculpture created by taking a mold of a living subject.

Desneige Meyer officially started Memory Castings in October 2006, though she has always been an artist. Growing up, Desneige painted and sculpted for pleasure and she studied as a Glass Blowing Major with a Minor in Sculpture. A very talented artist, she somehow seems to capture feelings and emotions as well as a physical sculpture. Memory Castings can be created from baby feet to pregnant bellies, human faces to grandma’s hands entwined with each of her grandkid’s, as below. This one is of course not yet finished, but even so you can see the tremendous detail that these castings will capture and feature. A partnership with All Care Pet Services now also sees casting available for clients who are mourning the loss of a pet. Pet lovers will want to visit www.MemoryCastingsPets.com!

Castings can be done in your Fraser Valley or Vancouver home, or at the Memory Castings locations in Abbotsford or Vancouver. The molding process takes no more than about 30 seconds, so it is a quick process to capture and not uncomfortable for little ones. Dental alginate or a thin body-casting rubber are the materials used in the molding process.

Desneige offers a variety of products to showcase your castings. 18 different shadowbox frames, magnets, keychains and even rubber scrapbooking stamps! Click here to view a gallery of some of her finished pieces – such lovely keepsakes!

I love Desneige’s work! She cast my whole family and we made a ‘Family Tree’ out of our hands, and added leaves made of paper with our family values written on them. It’s a beautiful feature on our wall that will be a fantastic momento for our kids even after we’re gone. They can open the shadow case it’s in and actually put their hands up against the castings. Desneige is so great to work with and so creative. Her services are my favourite gift to a friend that has a new baby. I highly recommend her.
