Spotlight: March 22, 2010 – McJac’s Roadhouse Grille

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

There is rarely a weekend that goes by where we don’t crave brunch from a fabulous restaurant in South Surrey – McJac’s Roadhouse Grille Restaurant.  In July 2009 they completed a huge renovation and now Roadhouse Grille is better than ever! With the addition of the Roadhouse Bake Shoppe and Cheese Market next door, this little piece of real estate on King George Highway is one of our favourite local haunts.

Regulars to McJac’s Roadhouse Grille put their name down with the hostess, then comfortably seat themselves on an old church pew or movie theatre seat, lovingly gazing up at the guitar fan hanging in the front entrance. Newbies are always easy to spot, as they smile and point and look around the amazing collection of unique decor items throughout the restaurant.  The eclectic design of McJac’s Roadhouse Grille is ‘a peek inside my Dad’s head’ according to Owner Dwayne Jacobson’s daughter Lise, who runs the Roadhouse Bake Shoppe & Cheese Market next door. Dwayne smiled at the suggestion, but was sure to show us around the restrooms which were designed by his wife. And wow are those ever cool bathrooms!  Your eyes never get tired at this place – every corner has something unique to check out.  There’s even a Treasure Cave for kids designed by Elizabeth Hollick, a talented local mural artist.

The 2009 renovations saw the addition of a fine dining room (which doubles as a great meeting room) and deco-lounge area to compliment the original retro-inspired restaurant and patio.  The retro room moved next door to a new space, but is literally the same decor as it was previously.  There is something for everyone, for every occasion, at this great place!

So… back to that delicious brunch we always crave.  It’s definitely one of the things that has made McJac’s Roadhouse Grille famous with locals.  However, did you know they serve over 30 martini flavours and host local musicians on weekend evenings? That’s right – this awesome brunch restaurant in South Surrey is also a fabulous lounge in the evenings!  A regular customer told us he often visits to enjoy “the best prime rib around”.  We’re going to have to check that out!

In 2002 when Dwayne purchased the restaurant, it served mostly vegetarian cuisine with a few chicken/turkey dishes.  While they have introduced a greater selection of meat dishes, vegetarians still enjoy a vast vegetarian offering at the restaurant.  Their lentil-made veggie burgers and vegetarian borsch are very popular – folks come from all over the Lower Mainland for these tasty dishes!

The Roadhouse Bake Shoppe & Cheese Market is a whole other exciting experience itself.  We lovingly refer to this delicious shop as ‘cheese heaven’, where there are several huge wheels of cheese on display and they carry 100+ varieties of cheese.  A few steps inside this spacious shop and you would be right to call it ‘bakery heaven’ as well.  The treats and fresh-baked breads are to die for.  Simply delicious!  Lise explained that the idea for the Bake Shoppe came directly from customer requests to buy Roadhouse Grille’s fresh-baked bread to take home.  The kitchen simply wasn’t equipped to keep up the requests, so they decided to open up next door.  And what goes great with bread?  Cheese!  You will find a scrumptious and vast selection of local artisan products as well, which we always love to see :)

We definitely recommend trying out McJac’s Roadhouse Grille and the Bake Shoppe & Cheese Market.  We are already die-hard brunch fans, but will definitely be hanging around for some evening entertainment sometime soon.  Care to join us?

I love this place! I only get to BC one time a year but each and every time, I bee-line it to the Roadhouse. It’s grown and changed a lot since 2002. You can tell the owners love their restaurant but also love their customers!
