Spotlight: January 3, 2011 – Horty Girl

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

Congratulations to Amy C! This contest is now closed.

When it comes to indoor plants, our team can sure attest to the fact that all female consumers do not enjoy fake purple bird decor and rooster-themed flower baskets. When I received my first Horty Girl piece two years ago, I was thrilled! It is still alive (win!), it still looks gorgeous and it was created right here in our Fraser Valley! I went in search of the local company who created it and met a lovely, hardworking team right down by the Canada/USA border.

Horty Girl is the creation of owner Cheryl Dawn. After studying Horticulture at Kwantlen, then taking on a few projects in her new field, Cheryl soon noticed an opportunity in the indoor plant market. The industry was lacking the stylish, convenient indoor plants such as this. There was nothing on the market like Horty Girl, so Cheryl got to creating a few samples and the retailers she approached absolutely loved them! That was in 2005, when Cheryl was creating the pieces in a 40×40 workshop at her home. Just a few weeks ago, Cheryl and her team opened up a big new production facility in South Langley, as well as a second production facility in Ontario!

We know how hard entrepreneurs work, regardless of the powerful, commited team they may have behind them. It’s always lovely to meet someone so humble and appreciative of the work of their team. Cheryl couldn’t share enough of how talented and hardworking her staff is. I had a chance to visit their brand new production facility and see this hard working team in action!

So what is Horty Girl exactly? Horty Girl is ‘an infusion of brilliant ideas utilizing live plants, natural elements, the latest designs and colors, combined with exclusive décor pieces and inspired plant packaging‘. They are decorative indoor live plants in modern, simple, eye-catching pots, bowls and recycled, reusable stylish plastic boxes. Cheryl says her vision is to encourage a connection between people and plants, and in that process, connect people with one another.

Horty Girl creates living art. I have gifted men, women, friends, colleagues, 80 year olds and 20 year olds with Horty Girl pieces. Their simple yet bold designs are a great fit for anyone and can be enjoyed in any room of the house, an office, classroom or boardroom.

I especially enjoy the Natural Elements creations (above) that feature inspiring words written on pretty message stones. There are ten messages available, including: Love, Family, Inspire, Friends, Joy. It’s nice to give a powerful thought/wish along with a pretty plant. Again, a great calorie-free gift idea for the new year.

The Horty Girl website is full of great information about indoor plants, including updated care information for the species they sell and details about their unique new Smart Stick watering method.

Find Horty Girl at several retailers throughout the Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland, and nationwide.

One lucky FVP reader will get to enjoy a gorgeous Liriope, similar to the two pictured above with SandArt, polished pebbles and a message stone. Please leave a note below to be entered to win! Winner will be announced January 16, 2011. Thanks Cheryl!
