Bloomz n’ Herbz – Pulse Spotlight – 06.27.11

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

For people looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and get back to nature, there may be no better place than Bloomz n’ Herbz to stop and literally smell the flowers. Bloomz n’ Herbz, located in Rosedale on the bank of the Fraser River, is a little piece of heaven on earth, complete with display gardens and U-Pick flower and herb gardens.

Run by Frits and Laura Praat, Bloomz n’ Herbz is now in its second year. Visitors to the gardens can enjoy the lush landscape while taking the in display gardens—actual antique beds that have been planted with flowers. For guests who just want to come and enjoy the display garden (and maybe have a picnic and relaxing afternoon surrounded by nature), there’s no charge at all. “Some people come here to walk, some to see the gardens, some want to picnic and meditate and see the eagles and frogs,” Laura Praat says. “They want to come and not be bothered by other people and not be bothered by retailers. They can spend hours here.”

For those who want to pick flowers or herbs, Bloomz n’ Herbz offers a U-Pick work station, complete with flower clippers, buckets, fertilizer, wrapping paper, instructions for cutting the flowers and a price list. (Prices vary based on the flower or herb being picked and can fluctuate due to the growing season.) One of the benefits of cutting your own flowers is they last longer than if they’re bought at the store. “They also show more effort than if you’ve just gone into a store to buy them for someone,” Frits says.

Flowers that can be found at Bloomz n’ Herbz include callas, irises, peonies, sunflowers and tulips, although availability may vary due to the season. The herbs include sage, mint, chives, oregano, rosemary and lemon balm. Potted herbs are also available for sale. Bloomz n’ Herbz is a semi-lavender farm, with rows and rows of lavender for people who can buy it to make soaps and oils.

Visitors are welcome to come to the gardens and spend hours enjoying the sights. The gardens are open from June until the frost starts, from dawn until dusk. The road stand is open year round. In the fall, Bloomz n’ Herbz offers U-Pick pumpkin and gourd. In the spring, Bloomz n’ Herbz runs TulipMania, a fundraising event for the BC Cancer Foundation and Chilliwack Hospice Society.

Because the gardens are right by the Fraser River, many people stop by to walk the dyke and then have some rest time in the gardens. Or, men will go fishing while their wives pick flowers. Sometimes, families needing a rest from a long drive will stop in the garden for a break from their vehicles.

  2. Hello there, I am a local Abbotsford travel agent and finding new places to visit myself and with travel guests is what I like to. Working as a travel concierge in a hotel, guests visiting love to know where they can go for a walk, a coffee or to spend the day exploring where they are staying. I’ll be visiting for sure to see your place, it looks absolutely lovely in the photos of your spotlight story and I look forward to meeting you soon.

Perhaps you have a few brochures I can have at the hotel front desk for guests wanting to visit you.
