It’s hard to spend money on new makeup products when you don’t really know whether you’re going to like them or not. That’s why it’s great to read reviews from people like yourself that have taken the time to try a product and voice their honest opinion on how well it worked, or didn’t. Not just a paid opinion either. A true trial and error, if you will.
I recently tested some great new products that are being launched in London Drugs stores across Canada. While I was excited to try them all, I definitely had some clear favorites from the group.
Revlon recently launched a new foundation called Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation, a creamy, almost mousse-like foundation that has got all day staying power! There’s a great range of color shades to choose from and the product really delivers a nice, even finish on the skin. Whether you apply the foundation with your fingers or a foundation brush, it allows you to build up coverage without feeling or looking too cake-y.
This makeup is meant to stay in place and last throughout the day and it actually does. Though I didn’t give it a go for a full 24 hours, it left my skin with a flawless, semi-matte finish all day. I would consider it to be a medium-to-full coverage foundation and works really well to even out discoloration on the skin. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance at the store to help you match a shade to your own skin type.
A fun and fairly inexpensive new line of makeup products has launched in Canada, called NYX Cosmetics. Have you heard of them? They actually carry a large line of makeup products at mid-range pricing and I was giddy with excitement to try their Super Skinny Eye Marker, a liquid eye liner with a fine tip point.
I tried the marker in Carbon Black and though the tip of it was shorter than what I normally prefer (and a little less flexible), it actually applied quite nicely. I was able to create both thin and thick lines on my eyelid and it really held on well throughout the day. I did notice that the color came off close to the inside rim of my eyelid, where it’s more moist, but did not smudge or smear on my upper eyelid at all. It was easy to remove at the end of the day, which is nice. This eyeliner was surprisingly comparable to my all-time favorite eyeliner and definitely held it’s own against other more “high-end” brands.
The next product that I tested was Loreal’s Voluminous Power 24H mascara. With collagen boosters that are meant to give lashes 24 hours of volume, I was excited for the possibility of extra lush lashes. Lovely lashes that look full without clumping or smudging? Count me in! Unfortunately, the minute I opened the tube to try this mascara, the smell of it left me puzzled. It claims to be fragrance-free but I was surprised by the strong “plastic” smell that came from the tube.
I decided to carry on and try it anyway and was pleased that within just a few coats, I was able to work up some nice volume. The brush is a lot wider and fuller than what I’m used to and prefer, but with a little patience, still does the trick. It didn’t flake throughout the day, but I did find that my lashes got somewhat itchy near the end of the day, something I don’t usually experience. The mascara does remove nicely, whether you make a mistake and remove with a q-tip or wash it off at the end of the day. Unfortunately, this one won’t be going on my “must-have” list anytime soon.
