Growing up as a fisherman’s daughter, fish and chips were always a family favourite in our household. Now that I’m all grown up (and adjusting to a life without fresh fish at my fingertips), I’ve learnt just how difficult it can be find a great plate of fish and chips! This month we set off in search of the traditional British favourite, and were surprised to find great fish and chip restaurants throughout the Fraser Valley – not just White Rock! Whether you are new to the fish and chip idea, or are a long time fan, we promise you’ll love the mouth-watering plates these restaurants serve up!

15479 Marine Drive, White Rock

Famous for fish and chips since 1975, Moby Dick Seafood Restaurant is the place to be for seafood on the White Rock strip. Serving up fresh Alaskan Cod and hand-cut French fries in huge sized portions, the Oswald and Morrison families were determined to make great use out of their homemade family recipes. It’s worked out well for them so far and 37 years later they have been named a top insider spot on Travelocity.ca! This is definitely a place to eat in, especially with all the kitschy decor. The outdoor nautical patio is a treat during the summer months or simply cross the street to enjoy fish and chips on the beach!
Fort Fish & Chips
9152 Glover Rd, Langley
604-882-3990
Located across from the Fort Langley Community Hall, this fish & chip diner serves up large portions in a family friendly atmosphere. Their light batter coats fresh fish fillets with the perfect crunch! The best part? It’s non-greasy too, which means we can feel better about having a second piece. Make sure to ask for the specials and whatever you do, don’t skip out on their homemade tarter sauce – it’s definitely worth the calories!
Victory Fish & Chips
#5 – 45695 Hocking Avenue, Chilliwack
604-701-6997
Best known for their all-you-can-eat deals ($9.95 for lunch), Victory Fish & Chips is a little diner that packs a big punch. Located near the UFV downtown Chilliwack campus (they recently relocated from the Sardis area), Victory Fish & Chips serves up true English style fish and chips, along with other British pub food. We love their fresh cut potatoes (nothing beats chips from scratch!) and the melt in your mouth flavour that can only come from dishes made with love. They also make their own tartar sauce in house and it’s delicious. If you are getting your meals to go, make sure to ask for a side of sauce!
#690 – 22709 Lougheed Hwy, Maple Ridge
604-466-8200
In the Maple Ridge area and feeling hungry? Check out Austin Fish & Chips for a great grab-and-go picnic idea! Perfect for taking the kiddies to Aloutte or Whonnock Lakes for an afternoon of good food, frisbee and family fun. They usually have great specials for take out meals as well as dine-in meals. If you have an even hungrier clan, opt to dine in for their all-you-can-eat specials for $11.99 (on select days, check their website for details).
Saturday’s Fish & Chip Restaurant
8080 120th St, Surrey
604-626-8253
Saturday’s Fish & Chips live up to their reputation of serving up fish & chip platters “imported from England”! We know it’s because of their large portions and hand cut chips, plus the fact that their fish comes in fresh daily doesn’t hurt either! Choose between Alaskan cod, wild salmon or halibut battered platters and a selection of other goodies like steak pies, burgers and sandwiches. Great take-out specials (usually save 15% off to-go orders) but consider dining if you’re a sports fan – they play all the games! Saturday’s is a licensed restaurant so feel free to order a beer too!
