Our Pulse Spotlights aren’t always about discovering hidden gems in the Fraser Valley, they’re about sharing well-loved businesses too! In a world of big box movie cinemas, we were so excited when we learned that the beloved Cottonwood 4 Cinema’s in Chilliwack is, and always has been, a family run business.

Since they first opened the doors in 1995, Cottonwood 4 Cinemas has always been a great destination. In addition to being a huge part of many first date memories, this cinema is also known as the local spot for affordable family fun! With affordable admission prices,$6 for adults and $5 for children, you really can take the whole gang without breaking the bank!

Mother and daughter team Cathy Rayner and Pauline Lamb purchased the theatre from the original owners 3 years ago. Since Cathy had been their bookkeeper for a number of years before the cinema was put up for sale, she jumped at the opportunity to keep it a family business. It didn’t take long before she convinced her mom Pauline to join in on the adventure, and the two now divide up the management tasks between them.

Intent on keeping much of the original feel of the theatre, no drastic renovations were completed during the recent upgrades, with the exception of the new 3D screen addition! Even the smaller renovations that were done (touch of paint here, change of decorations there) were all done with the kind of love only a family business brings. Many of the decorations for movies and for holidays are designed by Cathy and Pauline, who source local supplies as much as they can. Even the velvet ropes leading up to the concession stand were re-covered by Pauline’s mother!

The family feel here doesn’t end with those who are actually related either – it extends to their employee team as well. Many team players here are trained in several different areas to help make the customer experience better. Don’t be too surprised if you find the projectionist popping behind the concession counter to lend a helping hand! Even with this great team, Pauline still loves working the admission booth and interacting with the people coming into her theatre. With 500 seats in the building, she loves getting to get to know all the different guests coming into a see a movie, if only for a few minutes!

Weekly specials at this Chilliwack movie theatre make movie nights even more affordable. On Tuesdays, all admissions are only $3.50 ($6.50 if 3D) and visiting on a Wednesday night will get you free popcorn for every regular priced admission! Worried about not getting to see the new releases? Just be patient. Cottonwood 4 Cinemas does get all the same movies as the bigger theatre chains, it might just take a few extra weeks. And in this economy, we think this is a small price to pay for affordability!

Another advantage of supporting local community theatres means more variety in weekly movie showings. On now is Cottonwood 4’s Art Film Series, which showcases a new independent art film every week until mid-December (2011). Art Film showings will take place every Sunday and Monday, and everyone is welcome.

Thankful for their community, Cathy and Pauline are always looking for ways to give back. Each holiday season they offer concession discounts to guests that bring in a canned good for their food drive, and donation cups can always be found near the admission booths.

Cathy and Pauline would love to welcome one of our readers and three of their friends to Cottonwood 4 Cinemas! Please leave a note below to be entered to win a 4 pack of admission tickets.

Winner will be chosen at random on November 25, 2011.

Update: Congratulations to our winner, Taylor. Have fun!

If you’re looking for the kind of place that has it all—fun for the kids, yummy treats and shopping for the adults—your might want to check out Birchwood Dairy. Not only do they carry their own ice cream (in a variety of delicious flavours), they also have a petting zoo, viewing area and place to visit the calves.

Birchwood Dairy is owned by Grace and Len Krahn with two of their sons, Richard and Ryan.

The Krahn family opened the dairy in its current location (on the Sumas Prairie) in 1968 and opened the market in the early 1980s. The dairy sits on approximately 200 acres in the Fraser Valley—with magnificent views of the mountains—and is home to around 150 milking cows and 150 young stock.

The market boasts the dairy’s own products, all of which are processed onsite. The dairy produces 50 delightful flavours of gourmet ice cream—including After Dinner Mint, Chocoholic, Fudgy French Vanilla, Funky Monkey, Orange Smoothie and Cherry Custard—and also provides frozen yogurt, feta cheese, cheddar and Monterey jack cheeses, sour cream and cheddar curd. The market sells these products plus fresh fruit and veggies, fudge and eggs. If you need something more substantial than ice cream, the deli counter offers soups and sandwiches.

Moving To Dallas

There’s a lot for kids at Birchwood Dairy, too. A petting zoo (run through the summer) houses incredibly friendly (and curious) goats, sheep and horses. People who want to see the cows being milked can go to the viewing room, or they can visit the maternity and calf barn, to see the newest additions to the Birchwood Dairy family. When the weather’s nice, there are plenty of outside areas to sit, eat, relax or visit with friends in the fresh air.

“People love coming to the country,” Grace Krahn says. “They can come out and spend two to three hours here. It’s a nice place to come and relax and have the atmosphere of a real working farm. It’s a very scenic place.” Birchwood Dairy is part of the Abbotsford Circle Farm Tour – a fabulous way to discover other local artisans and producers in our Fraser Valley.

Stop by Birchwood Dairy, treat yourself to gourmet ice cream and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the country. We have a $50 gift certificate for one lucky reader to spend at Birchwood Dairy. Please leave a note below to be entered to win. Winner will be drawn at random on August 26, 2011.

A true throwback to the past, drive-in movie theatres are one of those things that make you feel nostalgic, even if you aren’t old enough to remember what they were like in their prime. From the excitement of picking that primo parking spot, to those cheesy hotdog concession commercials, drive-in movie theatres offer something so unique that modern movie houses just can’t compete with. These days, finding an operational drive-in movie theatre can be a tricky task, but lucky for us we have one in our very own backyard!

Twilight Drive-In Movie Theatre, located just a stone’s throw from 264th St & the Fraser Highway, has been sending people back to the old days of cinema since September 2005. To someone unfamiliar with the drive-in movie theatre experience, the open field may not look like much during the day but it certainly comes alive at night. With the capacity to hold 400 vehicles, Twilight Drive-In prides itself in creating an environment where families and friends can come together to bond, if only for a few hours. Visitors are able to choose their own parking spaces (asides from a few height limitations), making it easy to park in groups if they are meeting people there, or travelling in multiple vehicles.

Owner Jay, along with his wife Camla and son Vesham, knew they wanted to create a family friendly experience that was not only unique, but affordable as well. Offering double and triple feature evenings (showing all new releases), Twilight provides everyone with the opportunity for a movie night out. With up to 3 movies for the price of one elsewhere, visitors to Twilight pay just one admission price ($7.50 – $12.50 depending on the night) and are free to stay for all the features showing that evening.

Admission gates usually open approximately 45 minutes before show time, and guests are encouraged to come early to set up and settle in. One of the neatest things about attending Twilight Drive-In is that you decide just how comfortable you’d like to be! Not only are lawn chairs, air mattresses and blankets allowed here, they are all part of the fun! In fact, by the time the feature was about to start, the open space looked a lot like one big campground (with a 92’ by 40’ screen of course)!

A projectionist since 1969, Jay has always had a love for film. So much so, that after graduating from university, Jay decided to pursue a career in the projection and cinema industry instead of following his schooling. His passion has stayed with him after all these years, and we loved how enthusiastic he is about what he does. Even now as a business owner, it is so nice to see that he still spends most of his time doing what he loves – running the projection room!Twilight Drive-In Movie Theatre is open 7 days a week, with show times varying depending on the time of year and current sunset schedule. Shows always run, rain or shine, so there’s no need to get discouraged if it rains on your parade! Please see their website for detailed feature times, and specials! We would love to convert you to a drive-in movie fan because, well, where else can you go out in public in your pyjamas without getting funny looks?

To those of us that have little or no experience in canoeing or kayaking (or paddle sports in general), that big blue building on the highway by the McCallum exit is just another building we pass on the way to work. To paddle sport enthusiasts though, its like one great big candy store! That blue building with the paddle sport mural is home to Western Canoeing & Kayaking, which has been serving Abbotsford and the surrounding communities since 1978!

When Western Canoeing & Kayaking started out in Mary and Marlin Bayes’ basement, they had no idea it would grow to what it is today. What started out as a passion for paddling has grown into a business that not only provides great service and products to experienced paddlers, but encourages new people to give it a try as well! Now into their 27th year of production, Western Canoeing is both a production warehouse for Clipper Canoes, and a retail store for canoes, kayaks, paddles and other related gear such as river guides and life vests (for humans and doggies!).

With a great mixture of gear for experienced and new paddlers alike, the staff at Western Canoeing are extremely novice friendly. They understand that starting a new sport can be a daunted task, especially if it requires new equipment! Not only are they trained to walk you through the decision making process to determine which options are right for you, they are also avid paddlers themselves. New customers are encouraged to ask questions, and are comforted by the fact they are receiving answers from a knowledgeable individual.

Not sure where to start? General manager Lynn Smith suggests considering the following 3 W’s before looking at purchasing or renting a kayak or canoe: Where you will be going (ocean, lake, river), who you will be going with (solo, family, dog), and what will you be doing (leisure paddle, speed paddling)? The answers to these questions will help staff recommend which canoe or kayak is right for you, amongst the hundreds of model types!

One of the neat things about Western Canoeing & Kayaking is their on-site canoe production. Customers purchasing a canoe have the option of customizing their canoe to suit them, with a turn-around time of less than a week! Examples of customization can include coloring, seating placement and stern design to allow for the occasional use of a motor. Plus, by ordering local your canoe (whether customized or not), is ready for pick up by you! No special freight charges necessary.

If you’re thinking about taking up a paddling sport, but aren’t quite ready to make the commitment of purchasing a canoe or kayak, consider renting one! When you rent from Western Canoeing & Kayaking, the per day rental fee includes everything you need to get out on the water. From paddles and life vests, to the car top carrier kit – it’s all included!

Lessons and demo events, both offered by Western Canoeing, are also great ways to dip your toe in the water (literally!). With events taking place throughout the Fraser Valley, and beyond throughout the summer, there’s bound to be an event coming up in your area! Check the lesson and demo event schedules for more information, and registration instructions.

Ever wonder what it would be like to visit a cartoon land? Well, there’s a way to find out and it’s right in our backyard! Located in the summery community of Cultus Lake, Giggle Ridge Adventure Golf is one of those places that are pretty hard to miss!

It doesn’t take long after walking through the grandeur front gates to realize this is no ordinary golf course – and it was definitely planned that way. From the moment Dan & Janis Sawatzky decided to build an adventure mini golf course, they knew they wanted to create something special. Having built a number of mini golf courses for others throughout his career, Dan was excited to let his imagination run with possibilities when creating the initial design for Giggle Ridge.

The adventure golf course first opened its doors to the public in 2000 after exactly 100 days of constructing, creating, renovating and painting. Although the days were long during the construction phases, there were never any complaints – many of the team members had flown from all over just to be a part of Dan’s unique project. Talk about being built with love! It’s no surprise then, that Dan and his crew took no shortcuts when it came to creating an attraction that drew visitors in and kept the rest of the world out.

Visiting adventure golfers can expect to have all their senses entertained as they make their way through the 18-hole course. From the exceptionally blue water, to the strategically placed waterfall (to drown out the highway noise), everything here was thoroughly thought out before it was implemented. Even the flower placement is accurate, with marsh-like flowers being planted near the streams and high elevation flowers planted only near the tops of the trees. In fact, there isn’t anything throughout the whole course that seems as though it doesn’t belong. Even the tool shed has been disguised to aid in the flow of the course! One of the neatest features of the Ridge? The scaled down (but completely accurate) locomotive that sits atop of the park bearing the company’s logo!

As if the scenery and sounds weren’t enough, there is also a story being told if you look closely. Visitors to the park are encouraged to read the Legend of Giggle Ridge to get acquainted with the history of the park and how it came to be. We promise, all of the details will make much more sense after you read it!

Most importantly, however, was Dan’s vision to create a fun, family friendly destination in the Fraser Valley. Lighthearted signs throughout the course remind visitors of the family nature of the park, while plants and structures separate the holes to allow for a more private family experience. He even insisted on keeping the course itself relatively straightforward to allow even littler kiddies to play along. If you have bigger children (or you are a bigger one at heart), just tell them to try for hole-in-ones on every hole. It may be a lot more challenging, but Dan tells us it’s possible!

The mini golf course is open for daytime and early evening mini-putting, with the course lighting up as the sun starts to go down. Group discounts are available for larger parties and the resident mascot Flapjack the Bear has been known to make appearances on special occasions if you let him know in advance that you are visiting!

With so many people concerned about making choices that are environmentally responsible, it seems only natural that dairy farmers would make a shift in the same direction. Bakerview EcoDairy is a dairy that not only takes environmental responsibility to heart, but is also geared to educating consumers about dairy practices. This local gem is located in Abbotsford. Have you been yet?

Bakerview EcoDairy sits in a surprising location. Behind the dairy sits 80 acres of farmland, but across the highway from the dairy sit numerous big box stores. Somehow, that doesn’t detract from the quaint feeling you get when you enter the dairy or the Nutrifoods Market, which sits on the same property and sells the dairy’s products under the Vitala brand name. Nutrifoods has a delicious deli with fresh sandwiches, salads and baked goods. Visitors are invited to enjoy lunch on their peaceful country patio.

Bill Vanderkooi, president of the Bakerview EcoDairy, says he chose the location because he wants to encourage agritourism, and location is vital in bringing in visitors. “My personal commitment is to education and to showcasing the dairy industry,” he says. “I want to promote the industry as a whole. [The EcoDairy is] a farm committed to showcasing technologies and environmental sustainability along with cow comfort and care.” Bill was raised on a local dairy farm and has a Master of Science in Animal Science, specializing in dairy cattle nutrition and physiology.

These Fraser Valley cows, each tagged with their names, are living the modern life, too! Although milking the cows often brings to mind the image of a farmer sitting on a stool while the cow stands idly by during the milking, at Bakerview, the milking is done at a robotic milking station. And, rather than being told when they have to milk, the cows have free access to the station, so they can be milked as they want.

The dairy also includes a self-grooming station for the cows and a mechanical device that brings in bedding for the cows, so they are not disturbed by large-scale equipment moving materials around. What’s more, the floor of the dairy actually has rubber on top of concrete, to cushion the cows as they walk or when they lie down. It all adds up to some happy and content cows.

Fashion Jewelry Gold

In addition to being robotic, the EcoDairy is also technologically advanced, with webcams set up so visitors to the website can watch the milking station, the self-grooming station and the feeding lane. Check it out!

One of the best sights at the EcoDairy is the goats on the roof! The goats have access to a green roof, making them a welcoming sight for visitors. They were out last time we visited and we enjoyed watching them eating grass, catching some rays and checking out visitors.

Preferred Guest Resorts

In addition to Nutrifoods Market, which is open daily, visitors can stop by the dairy on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays to take a tour—pre-booked group tours can visit Monday through Saturday, with advanced notice. The dairy includes not only cows but also a petting zoo, featuring miniature ponies, sheep, calves, pigs and goats and a learning centre.

This is a great place to visit with the family. Stop by for a tour, enjoy a drink on the Nutrifoods Market patio and take in this fabulous Fraser Valley agritourism destination!

We are so excited that this week has finally arrived. Fresh! Fraser Valley is taking place this Saturday, September 25th and we can’t wait! You are all invited to join us from 9AM – 5PM, at the Ramada Plaza in Abbotsford, as we celebrate our glorious Fraser Valley!

Fresh! Fraser Valley is a collaboration between FVP’s Kristi Ferguson and Danielle Knowles of Red Pencil Editing Services. As we both work with many talented local businesses, we thought it would be great to bring together the best of the Fraser Valley under one roof, for one day with a locally owned business showcase and a dynamic workshop series.

There is a great little piece of history located in the Fraser Valley. A gem where one can play with adorable animals, enjoy a delicious meal and be transported back to the early 1900′s.

Kilby Historic Site is located in the small town of Harrison Mills, BC. This five acre property is a step back in time, a place to enjoy a historical living story. Take a walk through the early century buildings and see life just as it was in 1906. From the antique stoves to the historical milk house, the early century clothing to the fully stocked general store, every piece of Kilby Historic Site tells an interesting tale.

Visitors enjoy a trip down memory lane as they explore a portrayal of the Kilby family’s living history. The general store was opened in 1906 by Thomas and Eliza Kilby, later run by their two sons. Since it closed, the store, post office and upstairs hotel rooms and living quarters have been kept just as they were. The store is fully stocked, the plates are on the table in the dining room… it is truly like stepping into a time capsule.

School and tour groups are welcome and invited to book ahead of time to enjoy hands on activities such as making old-fashioned ice cream and fresh apple cider, or playing junior merchant in the general store.

The property is home to a variety of animals including turkeys, chickens, playful pigs, goats, sheep, a mule and several cats. Guests can interact with the animals on this working farm; feed is available for purchase in the Waterloo Farm Gift Shop. The animals love attention and some of the turkeys and birds will be seen walking freely throughout the property.

Everywhere we look in the Fraser Valley, we are spoiled with breathtaking landscapes. Harrison Hot Springs has to be one of the prettiest local places to explore; Harrison Lake is absolutely splendid. We recently took a lake tour with Shoreline Tours and were treated to an afternoon of beauty and relaxation.

Shoreline Tours, located at Harrison Hot Springs’ Resort Marina, is run by Captain Steve Dunn. Steve tells us that there has been a boat cruise on Harrison Lake since the 1950′s! As a teenager, Steve and his brother used to work on the lake cruises, which led to Steve following his passion and starting his own tour company on this beautiful lake. Talk about a local expert – Steve knows Harrison Lake like the back of his hand!

Harrison Lake is 38 miles long and it takes approximately 3.5 hours to travel from one shore to the other by boat. Several local high school groups take the trip right across the lake to Port Douglas for some exploration. Many stay to camp, some even hike through to near Pemberton. There is so much history, so many things to see along this lake.

The boat, Laroan, is a 60 footer that is complete with a kitchen, bathroom, sitting room, stereo, TV/VCR and upper deck. The upper deck of the boat is comfy and spacious, and comes complete with a very large BBQ grill. Laroan is wheelchair accessible and it has stairways available for lake swimming. We enjoyed our afternoon tour with people of all ages – kids were entertained with marine life fossils, colouring books and different marine and wildlife sightings. The adults enjoyed the guided tour and the beautiful sights. It was so peaceful. Several cabins and homes line the shores of Harrison Lake. The most amazing thing about each of them? There is no road access – so not only do their occupants have to arrive by water, the impressive structures were all constructed by boating in the materials. Boggles the mind to think how long some of them must have taken to complete!

Up to 36 guests can enjoy the boat at any given time and it is available for chartered tours – a perfect number for an intimate wedding, a staff party or an afternoon with family and friends. It’s an affordable option to try something unique and really special. At $325/hour, a full boat would see cost at about $10 per person, per hour – not bad at all!

Shoreline Tours’ Harrison Lake tour leaves daily in the summer at 1PM and 4PM. The round trip to Rainbow Falls takes about 2.5 hours. It’s an interesting trip as you first go by the St. Alice hot springs, onto Echo Island, then through the channel up to Rainbow Falls. The regular lake tour trips do not stop at Rainbow Falls, but the chartered ones can do so. We had the opportunity to get off and check out the falls up close. They are… stunning. Loud, powerful, gorgeous. It was early in the summer season so the runoff was strong. Later in the year we’re told there is a beautiful pond at the foot of the falls, where people climb up to swim. Imagine the pristine water up there! Rainbow Falls is a favourite stop for wedding charters as the Falls make for a pretty fabulous photo background!

In the Autumn, Shoreline Tours changes its route and heads down Harrison River. The river tour runs from October 1st through the end of November, leaving daily at 1PM, at $45 per person. This tour sounds amazing and we will certainly be back to check it out. Spawning salmon, sea lions, swans, blue herons will all be seen at that time of year. The main attraction is the bald eagles, who flock to Harrison River by the thousands. They spend their Winter months here feeding. If you’ve never been to see a gathering of bald eagles like this, you must do so. They are cheeky, gorgeous creatures.

At just $32 per person ($29/seniors, $20 children, 5 and under are free), an afternoon lake tour is a great way to enjoy your day and do something out of the ordinary. Harrison Hot Springs beach boasts a huge variety of activities, but getting out on the lake is another fabulous perspective of this great Fraser Valley gem.

Thanks so much for the lake tour, Steve. What a great job you have, cruising one of the most beautiful places in the Fraser Valley! Readers, you must check this out. A few hours away from the hustle and bustle – so relaxing.

Have you been to Harrison Hot Springs lately? Located on the south shore of spectacular Harrison Lake, Harrison Hot Springs is one of the Fraser Valley’s most glorious holiday destinations.

Renowned for its natural beauty, Harrison Hot Springs offers visitors plenty of things to do while taking in some of B.C.’s most breathtaking scenery.

Perhaps Harrison Hot Springs is most famous for their namesake, the mineral hot springs. Visitors can enjoy the public mineral pool seven days a week, or wander along the beach up to take a look at the natural hot springs.

Summer activities in Harrison Hot Springs abound. The resort marina boasts plenty of water sport options to keep you cool: Enjoy a leisurely boat cruise with Shoreline Tours, take an eco tour with Harrison Eco Tours, cool off and have fun on a sea-doo, kayak, bumper boats or banana tube from Harrison Watersports, or simply relax on the beautiful sandy beach. Ice cream shops, fabulous restaurants and gift stores line the street directly across from the beach. There is always something to keep you busy! Stop by the Harrison Visitor Information Centre to pick up a copy of the Ticket To Explore booklet, which lists community events, local hikes and discount coupons to local businesses.
