Congratulations to our two winners! This contest is now closed.

As a kid, the thought of having your own toy store meant freedom to play with any and every toy you could imagine, all day long. That dream, in the mind of just about any kid, would be pure bliss. Imagine the fun and thrill of having every toy you could ever want, within reach, at any given time. While there may only be a few of us who turned that dream into reality, Matthew Purdy, the Owner of Toy Traders in Langley, is one of them.

This Yukon born man moved to BC to attend high school in Abbotsford and has been in business in Langley since 1995. What started mainly as a toy trading business has now evolved into BC’s largest independent toy store. As a former toy collector himself, Matthew is a great example of someone who enjoys what he does and who turned his passion for toys into a successful business.

The store is composed of three major elements and caters to a wide range of customer, from the wide-eyed little ones who go crazy with excitement to the not-so-little ones who still delight in nostalgic toys and collectible items. Regardless of which one you are, it’s a magical place to be.

The first element of the store is it’s Trade Centre, which accepts toys and collectibles from customers. Your trade-ins are valuated while you wait. The staff in the Trade Centre are knowledgeable on the current toy markets as well as recalls issued and will give you a fair value based on the toy’s condition and re-sell value. Any amounts you earn for the trade-in is provided to you in Trader Bucks, which never expire and are tax-free. They can be used on any item in the store, new or used (used items will have a green price sticker on them).

The second element of the store is its brand new toy section, which comprises 80% of the store. Toy Traders carries brands such as Lego and Playmobil, Melissa & Doug and Calico Critters, and many, many more. They also carry the entire line of Schleich’s hand-painted animals and Smurfs and boasts popular items such as Angry Birds and Vamplets.

The last element of the store is for the collectors. Collectible items, from new to nostalgic, are widespread from GI Joe to Transformers, DC and Marvel Comics, as well as movie collectibles for Star Wars, Terminator and more. If you’re a collector and you haven’t been to Toy Traders yet, you are missing out! They are Canada’s largest collectible store.

If the toy selection isn’t enough to intrigue you, you will be blown away by the displays in and around the store. These dioramas (or models representing a scene with 3-D characters) are detailed, full scale and intensely creative. From life size figures to re-enacted scenes from popular cartoons and movies, you’ll need to take your time to take it all in. And guess who’s responsible for these? Not a movie production crew. Matthew and his staff.

Toy Traders does their “leg work” in checking other flyer and sale prices, and displays comparative pricing on their shelves. They have weekly specials and new items coming in often, which you can learn of through their newsletter. Their well-informed staff take pride in their work, are great with kids and look forward to making your visit an enjoyable one. Just prepare yourself. When you walk in, someone will go bananas with delight, and it might not be your kids.

Toy Traders is gifting two of our readers $50 Trader Bucks each! Please leave a note below to be entered to win. Winners will be chosen at random on December 16, 2011.

Like the song goes, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, and a great way to spend your time (and some money!) is at Glenda’s Christmas Cottage. Glenda’s is an amazing Christmas store that opens up every year in November and December. If you’re looking for anything Christmas related—from candles to tree ornaments to a Christmas village—you’ll probably find it at Glenda’s. Honestly, we could spend hours at the store and still not see everything she has available.

Owner Glenda Cox opened Glenda’s Christmas Cottage 22 years ago at her husband’s suggestion. She had so many Christmas decorations he told her she should open a store at Christmas. Glenda says she didn’t think the store would survive and spent the first year operating out of one room while spending most of her time outside. After a few years, the store was expanded. Now, the cottage takes up an entire shed in the yard and Glenda has seven workers helping her manage the store. Even her granddaughters help out.

So how does she choose what she sells? Glenda goes to a variety of trade shows, including in Seattle and Toronto, and chooses items she thinks people will like. In her travels during the rest of the year, she looks for unique items to sell.

“I don’t sell crafts, that’s about the only thing I don’t sell,” Glenda says. “There are so many craft fairs out here that people can sell at. So I stay away from those. I also don’t sell wrapping paper. But I sell just about everything else that’s about Christmas.” That includes ornaments, gifts, decorations, gourmet foods, candles, potpourri, keepsakes, snowmen, Department 56 Dickens’ Village series, Byers’ Choice handcrafted carolers, jewelry, and dancing Santa hats.

Speaking of ornaments, Glenda’s carries virtually every type of ornament available, from ornaments for animal lovers to sports fanatics, and from purse and shoe designs to nutcrackers. She also carries the traditional ornamental balls in a variety of colours and designs. You can even top off your tree with one of the many different angels she carries. There’s also no shortage of reindeer or Santa decorations.

In addition to the cottage, Glenda’s yard is decorated for Christmas, including hundreds of Christmas lights, carefully put out by Glenda’s elves. Just driving up to the cottage will put you in a cheerful, Christmas mood. The lights are turned on daily at 4:00 pm.

Every year, Glenda’s Christmas Cottage holds a cookie decorating day, where around 400 children come to the store and decorate Christmas cookies with Mrs. Claus and Santa. This year, approximately $400 was raised at the event and donated to the local food bank. Glenda’s also helped decorate the LIFE Recovery house.

Glenda’s Christmas Cottage is open from November 1 through December 23 yearly. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday 12-5.

We have a $25 gift certificate for one lucky reader to spend at Glenda’s Christmas Cottage! Please leave a note below to be entered to win. Winner will be chosen at random on December 13, 2011.

Life is intensely busy. So much so that the stuff and the “to do” list sometimes overrides the basic need to take care of ourselves. Often, we are the last ones to get a much needed break. And when you finally take that break, it feels so good that you wonder why you left it for so long. For women, especially, this often rings true. Although relaxation may equate coffee with friends for one person and an hour of exercise for another, many people can appreciate the effects of a little physical pampering.

An idea and desire to provide a body, mind and soul experience in the comfort of your own home is how Pamper Your Soul evolved into a business over seven years ago. This business was started by two women: Maggie, an Aesthetician and Michelle, a Massage Practitioner who met over coffee through a mutual friend. Since that day, they have grown their idea into a successful service that meets the pampering needs of both personal and corporate clients.

Pamper Your Soul offers in-home spa treatments that include pedicures, manicures, back facials and massages. From weddings to birthdays to “just because” girl time, these parties offer a home experience that could not get any closer to home. Providing you have the space, they will set up their massage table and/or manicure and pedicure stations around your house and can manage up to 8 people per booking. Spa treatments plus the freedom to eat, drink and socialize at your leisure in your own home? Delightful!

Home spa parties are just the beginning for this company. Pamper Your Soul has greatly expanded their business to service corporate clients who offer chair massage and reflexology treatments for their employees. From ten, fifteen, or twenty minute chair massages for the upper back, shoulders and neck to reflexology treatments on the feet that target stress-relieving pressure points, Pamper Your Soul provides all the equipment needed to create a “Wellness in the Workplace” environment at your company. For employees that participate, these mini sessions not only help to relieve stress, but result in rejuvenation and better performance on the job.

The ladies at Pamper Your Soul are keen to work with companies to create a customized experience for their employees. Whether you want weekly or monthly visits or have 12 employees or 200, they can modify their schedules and work within your budget to accommodate your specific needs. They also have a referral program for businesses to earn rewards.

Most importantly, Michelle and Maggie want to build a relationship with and create a great experience for their customers, leaving them in a blissful, pampered state of mind. We could definitely handle that. How about you?

Our readers are invited to enter to win a 3 hour “Wellness in the Workplace” package, with a total value of $210. Individuals can enter to win chair massages/reflexology treatments for themselves and their co-workers and PYS will work to customize the package/schedule for the group/company that wins!

What a nice holiday surprise this would be for you and your hardworking coworkers! Please leave a note below to be entered to win. Winner will be chosen at random on December 5, 2011.

Our Pulse Spotlights aren’t always about discovering hidden gems in the Fraser Valley, they’re about sharing well-loved businesses too! In a world of big box movie cinemas, we were so excited when we learned that the beloved Cottonwood 4 Cinema’s in Chilliwack is, and always has been, a family run business.

Since they first opened the doors in 1995, Cottonwood 4 Cinemas has always been a great destination. In addition to being a huge part of many first date memories, this cinema is also known as the local spot for affordable family fun! With affordable admission prices,$6 for adults and $5 for children, you really can take the whole gang without breaking the bank!

Mother and daughter team Cathy Rayner and Pauline Lamb purchased the theatre from the original owners 3 years ago. Since Cathy had been their bookkeeper for a number of years before the cinema was put up for sale, she jumped at the opportunity to keep it a family business. It didn’t take long before she convinced her mom Pauline to join in on the adventure, and the two now divide up the management tasks between them.

Intent on keeping much of the original feel of the theatre, no drastic renovations were completed during the recent upgrades, with the exception of the new 3D screen addition! Even the smaller renovations that were done (touch of paint here, change of decorations there) were all done with the kind of love only a family business brings. Many of the decorations for movies and for holidays are designed by Cathy and Pauline, who source local supplies as much as they can. Even the velvet ropes leading up to the concession stand were re-covered by Pauline’s mother!

The family feel here doesn’t end with those who are actually related either – it extends to their employee team as well. Many team players here are trained in several different areas to help make the customer experience better. Don’t be too surprised if you find the projectionist popping behind the concession counter to lend a helping hand! Even with this great team, Pauline still loves working the admission booth and interacting with the people coming into her theatre. With 500 seats in the building, she loves getting to get to know all the different guests coming into a see a movie, if only for a few minutes!

Weekly specials at this Chilliwack movie theatre make movie nights even more affordable. On Tuesdays, all admissions are only $3.50 ($6.50 if 3D) and visiting on a Wednesday night will get you free popcorn for every regular priced admission! Worried about not getting to see the new releases? Just be patient. Cottonwood 4 Cinemas does get all the same movies as the bigger theatre chains, it might just take a few extra weeks. And in this economy, we think this is a small price to pay for affordability!

Another advantage of supporting local community theatres means more variety in weekly movie showings. On now is Cottonwood 4’s Art Film Series, which showcases a new independent art film every week until mid-December (2011). Art Film showings will take place every Sunday and Monday, and everyone is welcome.

Thankful for their community, Cathy and Pauline are always looking for ways to give back. Each holiday season they offer concession discounts to guests that bring in a canned good for their food drive, and donation cups can always be found near the admission booths.

Cathy and Pauline would love to welcome one of our readers and three of their friends to Cottonwood 4 Cinemas! Please leave a note below to be entered to win a 4 pack of admission tickets.

Winner will be chosen at random on November 25, 2011.

Update: Congratulations to our winner, Taylor. Have fun!

We know this week’s Pulse Spotlight may not instantly appeal to the masses, but to those who live with Celiac disease or have family members with gluten intolerance, we know you will be thrilled to learn of the brand new Zena’s Gluten Free Bakery in Maple Ridge! For those who just love delicious treats, read on. Zena’s baking is seriously delicious and we promise you will love their bakery treats even if you don’t require a gluten free diet.

Erin and Rebecca, the Zena’s, have daughters who are school friends. When the girls were entering Kindergarten, each were deciding what they were going to do career-wise moving forward. Rebecca’s family is gluten free and Erin loves to create healthful baked goods. Rebecca asked Erin to join forces with her and the business was up and running in less than a year! They opened their doors on October 15, 2011!

Zena’s Gluten Free Bakery is truly gluten free. No oats, barley, rye or wheat are used here. They are also a nut and sesame seed free bakery. As well, Erin and Rebecca are always looking for the healthiest way to create their treats, using natural sweeteners and colouring agents. Blueberries and other natural sources are used to create food colouring for specialty cake frostings.

If you’ve tried some of the more popular gluten free baked good brands, you will recall the common rice flour taste that overpowers the cookies, muffins or breads. Rice flour is a great alternative for those who can’t tolerate gluten, though it doesn’t always offer a smooth consistency to allow for nicely-textured baked goods. It put us off of trying gluten free products for years! Rice flour isn’t used at Zena’s. Instead, they use a delicious quinoa and sorghum mix that is smooth and delicious. You can purchase their specialty quinoa mix at the bakery, too, to use in your own baking.

Zena’s gluten free sandwich bread will impress, too. Available in regular sandwich bread, super psyllium bread or multigrain seeded bread, each homemade loaf is packed with healthy psyllium.

We indulged in some quinoa cranberry and quinoa chocolate chip cookies at Zena’s and they were absolutely yummy! Guaranteed you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between Zena’s cookies and a ‘regular’ cookie made with wheat flour. They are the perfect combination of crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside – moist, rich, flavourful, delicious. Some of their other specialties include double chocolate blondes, blueberry white chocolate scones and pumpkin chai muffins.

Social Media Marketing

On Wednesdays, Zena’s Gluten Free bakery offers a great selection of vegan delights. Muffins, cookies, cupcakes, scones – all wheat, dairy, honey and egg free!

It seems gluten allergies and intolerances are on the rise and it’s nice to know of this local specialty bakery. No more frozen rice bread for gluten free folks! How lovely to be able to visit a bakery where fresh loaves of homemade bread await you. Check out the pretty features board to see what’s on the baking rack each day.

You know what’s adorable? Finding entrepreneurs who love what they do. Like, LOVE it. We recently caught up with Melissa and Terrah of Aldergrove’s Jax & Jena and the joy radiating from these two was off the charts!

Sisters and great friends, Melissa and Terrah were excited to be raising their young families together. They each have a daughter, whose middle names are Jax and Jena, born just weeks apart. When their one year maternity leave was up after these daughters, they simply weren’t ready to return to their jobs. Babies and motherhood and loving everything about having children was their life. So, they collectively decided that since they love finding quality, unique products for their little ones and both ladies enjoy people, they would create a business together that married these two things! The idea of Jax & Jena was what they decided on and the company was born in 2010.

Jax & Jena is a mobile trunk show service that bring upscale baby and maternity wear to your home, offering modern, busy parents a fun way to shop for quality baby products. The ladies arrive fully stocked with sizes, up to size 4, offering instant gratification to the trunk show participants. Up to size 8 is available for most items by special order, though these do have to be ordered and take a couple of weeks.

Their product line includes Westcoast Baby, My Little Seat, Hatley, Lillibee, Strider, aden + anais, Bink Link, babybellies, Trumpette and other fantastic brands. There are also some lines which are exclusive to Jax & Jena, including Hulu Wuwu, created by a Mom in Hawaii. Melissa and Terrah’s focus is on carrying high quality items that they themselves have tested and would recommend to a friend.

So who throws a Jax & Jena party? Mothers with young children, friends hosting a baby shower, or anyone else with wee ones in their lives. One of Melissa & Terrah’s favourite kinds of parties are Grandma parties. Grandmas and Grandmas-to-be gather together for a fun social time to talk all things grandbabies (as we all know Grandmas love to do!) and shop Jax & Jena for their favourite little ones.

Jax & Jena trunk shows travel all over the Lower Mainland and Melissa and Terrah say their favourite part of the job, besides testing out all of the amazing products, is the flexibility it allows them as mothers and the absolutely fantastic people they meet along the way. Those who are expecting or those who have little ones at home are excited to shop for high quality, beautiful baby items and that’s a great energy to be around.

Online shopping is coming to the Jax & Jena website in the next while – stay tuned!

Terrah & Melissa would love to gift one of our readers a $50 credit toward a Jax & Jena trunk show. Please leave a note to be entered to win! Winner will be chosen at random and announced on November 10, 2011.

Is there anything better than a delectable drink that’s also environmentally friendly? We don’t think so, which is why we can’t get enough of Lotusland and their delicious, organic, local wines. That’s right; Lotusland is an organic vineyard based right here in Abbotsford. In fact, owners Liz and David Avery proudly say it’s the only 100 percent Fraser Valley Winery.

That means all the wines are made from Fraser Valley fruit, and they’re not just talking about grapes. Devil’s Spit, a red wine, is made from blackberries. But of course they have wines made from grapes, too. One of their best sellers is the Girlsrmeaner, a white wine in both dry and off dry, and the Ortega, with fresh citrus aromas. Or, if you feel like a red, they have a selection that includes Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Enigma.

But at Lotusland, it’s not just about the wines; it’s about caring for the environment. None of the fruit is exposed to chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Liz and David say that was important to them because they knew their children would be working with the grapes, and they didn’t want their children exposed to harmful chemicals. The priority, Liz says, is being good stewards of the land.

“The people of the Haida Gwaii have a saying that we borrow this earth from our grandchildren,” David says. “That’s a philosophy that goes in every bottle we produce.”

Because the wines are so delicious, you might assume Liz and David have an extensive history involving wines, but they don’t. Before starting Lotusland in 1997 (the retail store opened in 2002), Liz was a stay-at-home mom who did contract house cleaning once her children were in school. David was involved in regional sales for an office products company. They were amateur wine makers, who decided they wanted to spend their days in the outdoors. So they bought the property in Abbotsford where Lotusland now sits.

The acreage Lotusland is on is actually a reclaimed gravel quarry, so one of the first priorities was spending long hours in the yard, picking up all rocks larger than three inches—by hand. “There is not one square foot of this land that we haven’t altered,” Liz says.

Liz says the move to planting seeds was actually a progression. The land was seeded with hay, but Liz didn’t feel what they were doing was farming. So, David suggested growing grapes. They obtained cuttings from the Okanagan, cut them into the appropriate sizes and then, after a few years and a lot of hard work—during which David was still involved in his sales job—Lotusland wines were available for sale.

“We wanted a coastal flavour for our wines,” David says. “We’d like the Lotusland N.V. [pronounced like envy] to become the wine that coastal B.C. is known for, similar to what the Sauvignon Blanc is to New Zealand. We want to find something unique to this region, so people come for that wine.”

In addition to the Lotusland retail store, which offers wine tastings, Lotusland wines can be found in a variety of restaurants and retail outlets. A bottle of Lotusland wine makes a fantastic gift because it is local and organic, and so many people enjoy it. Lotusland organic wines range in price from $16 to $35. But even though the wines might just make a perfect gift, you can always pick up a bottle to enjoy yourself. Because the perfect bottle of wine, paired with a delicious meal, is a little taste of paradise. We especially love the Girlsrmeaner in off dry.

Would you like to visit this Fraser Valley winery? We are excited to send one lucky reader for a tour, for up to 12 people, of the winery, including a tasting from the tank and barrel and samples in their tasting room.

Please leave a note below to be entered to win. Winner will be chosen at random and announced on November 2, 2011. You must be 19 years of age or older to participate in this contest.

Whenever we find a store that is a little more hidden than the rest, we are that much more excited to share it with our readers! Tucked into Gasoline Alley, off of Glover Road in the heart of Fort Langley, is where you will find one of the more unique boutiques we’ve featured yet – Cranberries…Naturally!

This quaint little store offers all types of cranberry products from cranberry sauces to cranberry vinegars, cranberry candy, cranberry BBQ sauce and lots more. Imagine an entire store filled with cranberry goodness – that’s what you will find in Fort Langley.

Owner Jasmine Marjanovic didn’t know just what she was getting herself into when she attended the Fort Langley Cranberry Festival about 16 years ago. After attending the festival she was so excited to have discovered all the great things you could do with cranberries and how healthy they were for you! Jasmine jumped into the world of cranberries and researched as much as she could about the health benefits of these power packed ruby berries and became determined to share this information with her community.

After 4 years of planning, designing and renovating, Jasmine opened the doors to Cranberries…Naturally in 1999. Originally an old garage, the building that Cranberries…Naturally calls home required a bit of TLC before the store could open. Wanting to capture a bit of the history that her store shares with the building and community, Jasmine aimed to create a space that reflected the spirit and essence of Fort Langley. We believe she succeeded! Using a mixture of vintage armoires, eclectic artwork, wicker baskets and whimsical touches, Jasmine has created an inviting environment that makes you feel all warm and cozy as soon as you step inside.

Even those who aren’t familiar with cranberries will love this shop. Jasmine and her staff are happy to educate those customers who traditionally limit their cranberry intake to turkey dinners! They love sharing best uses of all the yummy cranberry products on their shelves as well as their multiple health benefits. We learned all kinds of great tips on our recent visit: not only are these little berries high in vitamin C, they are also natural whiteners and act as a natural antiseptic. They are also, when eaten frozen, great for soothing aching gums after a trip to the dentist.

Massage Dallas

Originally a supplier of cranberry products from all over Canada, Cranberries…Naturally now develops and distributes their own unique products. As Jasmine’s own creations started replacing the products she used to bring in, she discovered how much she loved creating and selling natural products. Cranberries…Naturally prides themselves on the preservative free and sulphate free processes used to create their products. Using ingredients such vinegar as a natural preservative or honey as a natural sweetener, Jasmine and her team are able to label their jars with ingredients that we can all read and pronounce.

We highly suggest a visit to this store if you love cranberries or if you’re looking to try a new, unique Fraser Valley product. You will find jams, jellies, sauces, vinegars, candies and all kinds of cranberry products that we bet you’ve never seen before. If you get a little overwhelmed, try out their Cranberry Zinger Salad Dressing – it’s Jasmine’s favorite so you can be sure it won’t disappoint!

Cranberries…Naturally products can also be found at select Capers and Whole Foods stores, as well as select markets and boutiques throughout the Fraser Valley, including Inspired Arts and Gifts.

We have a couple of yummy cranberry products to share with one of our fabulous readers. Please leave a note below to be entered to win! Winner will be chosen at random on October 24, 2011.

In our current world of big box stores full of generic knick knacks and tidbits, it’s refreshing to find a store that offers unique and one of a kind items. When you visit In the Company of Friends in Cloverdale, you will discover just this. Not only will you find personal and adorable treasures that are perfect for gifts (for others or yourself), but you might be inspired to spruce up your own space too!

In the Company of Friends celebrates its 9 year anniversary this December and is not only a family business, but a business full of support from friends. Barbara St. Laurent, a married Mother of two grown children, originally bought the space from one of her daughters and expanded it into what it is today. Her background stems from over 30 years of retail experience and she has lived all over the world, now residing in Cloverdale.

Many years ago, Barbara’s friends started making crafts, a somewhat foreign concept to her at the time. This not only became something that she loved to do, but also evolved into many, many years of craft show participation, a groundwork that would influence her confidence to purchase the retail space when the timing was right. Needless to say, she hasn’t looked back.

The store has a vintage feel to it, but also hosts a room full of modern items for babies and kids. You will find beautiful china, as well as home decor and gifts from brands like Midwest of Cannon Falls and Primitives by Kathy. The store displays change frequently with the latest season of celebration (Halloween is in full effect) and they also re-paint the walls throughout the year, creating beautiful backgrounds for their decor.

As you shop in the store, you’ll enjoy music from the 1930’s and 1940’s and when you leave with your goodies in tow, they’ll be packaged to perfection in adorable gift bags, seasonal tissue paper and cutesy stickers. Finding that perfect item and having it packaged like a beautiful gift, what a treat!

In the Company of Friends offers custom made gift baskets, staff gifts for companies and always has specialty packaging on site. They host several fundraisers in the store throughout the year, offering a fun night out, draw baskets and gift with purchase rewards, with a portion of sales going to a specified charity. They are involved in community events in the area, such as the Cloverdale Halloween Costume Parade and Santa’s Parade of Lights.

It’s clear when you visit this store that Barbara knows what she likes, loves what she does and is eager to help you find what you need. If you’re lucky, you’ll also get the chance to meet her mother Doreen, who helps in the store and brings homemade shortbread cookies at Christmas time. Be sure to visit the store closer to the Christmas season for unique ornaments and creative display inspiration. It is one of our favourite times to visit, though any holiday season is at treat at In the Company of Friends!

In the Company of Friends would love to gift one of our fabulous readers a gift basket of seasonal delights from their charming store! Please leave a note below to be entered to win. A winner will be chosen at random on October 24, 2011.

We don’t know about you, but we take every opportunity we can get to slow things down for a while and take in all life has to offer. Since we can’t just take off on vacation whenever we feel like it, we love to find great places in the Fraser Valley that allow us to relax, even for just a little while.

Close enough for a Sunday drive, but quiet and relaxing enough to make it feel like a mini escape, Vedder Mountain Grille is one of those fabulously relaxing places we speak of! They are cooking up homemade comfort food and it’s just like driving over for a visit at Grandma’s house.

Hard to miss with its bright blue exterior, this sweet Chilliwack restaurant stands out along the main strip in Yarrow.

Arizona Lasik

When Franklin & Laurie Dahl decided to take over the vacant building in 2009, they already had dreams of what they wanted it to become. Born with a love for cooking and an entrepreneurial spirit, Laurie jumped at the challenge of putting together not only the menu, but the restaurant renovations too (and boy did it need it!).

Dallas Lasik

With a vision in mind, Laurie scoured the valley for perfect furniture and décor pieces. She found some fantastic pieces including artfully mismatched table sets, beautiful pieces from Funky Junk Interiors, eclectic antiques and other work by talented locals. Determined to interject a little of his personality in the diner as well, Franklin managed to add his dirt-biking medal to the wall displays as well. As the biker on the exterior sign suggests, Vedder Mountain Grille fully supports the local dirt-biking community and even offers 10% for dirt-bikers stopping in for a bite.

After almost two years of offering up homestyle meals, it’s obvious that Laurie and Franklin have found the secret to their success. Although she wouldn’t offer up the delicious secret house salad recipe, Laurie did say it’s their love of fresh food, laid back atmosphere and fun loving attitudes that keep people coming back again and again.

From the moment you walk in the door, you know you are in for a relaxing and delicious treat. You feel like a “regular”, even if you aren’t. In fact, the first time we visited, we were greeted with such enthusiasm, we felt as if we were visiting an old friend.

Whether you are visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you certainly won’t be disappointed. Using fresh and local ingredients whenever possible, including local duck, potatoes, eggs and breads, Vedder Mountain Grille has a tasty menu: fresh blueberry pancakes, creamy carrot and fennel root soup, homemade lasagna and lots of other homemade delights. Handcrafted jams are served with breakfast (flavours rotate depending on what is in season); fresh aioli is served with homemade pita chips at dinner. All desserts are made fresh in-house, with their pies consistently becoming favourites of many locals.

Another thing both locals and visitors can appreciate are the great specials that can be found here on a daily basis. Follow Vedder Mountain Grille on Facebook to find out which specials are coming up.

Hours: Monday – Wednesday 8:00am – 3:00pm, Thursday – Sunday 8:00am – 8:00pm.

Hours are seasonal and are subject to change. We recommend you check their website for updated hours as the Winter season gets closer.

We would love for you to visit Vedder Mountain Grille! Please leave a note below to be entered to win a $50 gift certificate. Winner will be chosen at random on October 17, 2011.
