Kick Ass Cakes – Pulse Spotlight – 06.20.11

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Congratulations, Koreen. This contest is now closed.

With a punchy name like Kick Ass Cakes, one would expect to find cakes that are dynamic, thrilling and unique. Tasha Nagy, the Owner and cake decorating genius behind the company, does not disappoint.

While her creativity and passion for baking has just recently turned into a full-on business venture, Tasha has always enjoyed baking and making. Yes, it’s true. She was one of those girls with an Easy Bake Oven, making bite sized treats via light bulb for herself and her friends as a young girl.

A Bread Affair – Pulse Spotlight – 06.06.11

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Congratulations to Lynne R. This contest is now closed.

Mmm, fresh baked bread. We bet when you finish reading this week’s Pulse Spotlight, you won’t be able to think of anything else!

The Fraser Valley is home to some amazing bakeries. Truly, we are spoiled with the amount of talented bakers in our region – some of which have been in the same location for decades.

One of our favourite bakeries also runs a wholesale division to their business, meaning no matter where you are in the Fraser Valley, Metro Vancouver or beyond, there is somewhere nearby that carries breads from Langley’s A Bread Affair!

An Elegant Tea – Pulse Spotlight – 05.02.11

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

Since it is one of our favourite things to plan with friends, we set out on a mission to research the origin of the afternoon tea. According to what we have read, afternoon tea began in the mid-1800s by the Duchess of Bedford. In her era, lights (gas or oil) were introduced into wealthier homes and eating a late supper became popular. It was commonplace for one to begin the day with a light breakfast meal and then not eat again until dinner, which became increasingly later in the evening.

Legend has it that the Duchess felt unwell as dinner became later and later… she was hungry! She decided to host a mid-afternoon get together for friends, where she served tea and assorted snacks. This idea of an afternoon tea soon became a popular event for ladies of leisure and other high society types.

Cerealicious Eats – Pulse Spotlight – 04.18.11

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

We are sad to announce that Cerealicious Eats has now closed its doors.

Cerealicious Eats. The name of this week’s spotlight caught our attention immediately. When we learned it was a Marble Slab-esque concept for cereal instead of ice cream, we rushed over to take a peek!

Inspired by a concept that is popular in other nations, owners Jonathan & Ute decided that it’s about time such a place opened in their neighbourhood. Cerealicious Eats was the answer to their desire to create a business which married their passion for community and people with a family-friendly venture which allowed them lots of time with their children. In November 2010 they opened the door to this great cereal bar in Surrey.

Spotlight: Mozart Bakery/Marie Antoinette Cakes 04.11.11

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

When FVP was started in March 2009 the intention was, and it still is, to share local gems that we find on our adventures throughout the Fraser Valley. We are continuously shocked at how many of the hidden gems WE failed to notice for so long – though they are right in FVP HQ’s backyard! This sweet cafe is one of our favourite discoveries.

In 2003, Estelle Matheson and Luigi Guidolin purchased an existing bakery in Langley called Mozart Bakery. They did not change the name, but they certainly changed what Mozart Bakery is all about. Nestled in a strip mall in Walnut Grove, this European-style bakery offers the most scrumptious lunches, delectable European-inspired pastries, French-style mousse cakes, classic tortes and specialty cake creations that are as tasty as they are beautiful.

Spotlight: Seasonal 56 – 04.04.11

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

Congratulations, Andrew. This contest is now closed.

When passion is the driving force behind any venture, it is sure to be a success. In this case one man’s passion, his wife’s encouragement and a dedication to celebrating local have created a fabulous, successful, unique Fraser Valley restaurant called Seasonal 56.

Chef Adrian Beaty is the inspired force behind the menu at Seasonal 56. His career beginnings were centered around business and law, but with encouragement from his wife Shannon, Chef Adrian began exploring his culinary talents and passion. After honing his skills in restaurants and catering, followed by fabulous creative opportunities at Joseph’s, Gatsby Mansion and Piccolo Mondo, he opened The Seasonal Experience in downtown Langley.

In 2009 the growing restaurant venture moved to a larger space in Aldergrove, which is called Seasonal 56. The Seasonal Experience now runs strictly as the catering side of their business. If you’re planning an event where local ingredients and mouthwatering creations are high on your list – theirs is most certainly a menu to explore!

Spotlight: Lepp Farm Market 03.14.11

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Congratulations to Stella. This contest is now closed.

Charlotte and Rob Lepp have been farming in BC for over 25 years, so to say that they know a thing or two about fresh produce, quality meat and local suppliers is a huge understatement.  Between a self-described “foodie” who values preparing quality meals for her own family and a hard-working farmer who takes pride in providing great products, you have got two people with a major passion for local and home-grown ingredients.  And that’s just the beginning.

Lepp Farm Market has been a long time dream of Rob and Charlotte.  With the intention to build a year-round market that would also include local suppliers and gourmet food items, their dream became a reality in 2009 when its doors were opened.  With the look and feel of a farm market and a well organized store that has all of your grocery needs, they sure hit the nail on the head.

Spotlight: Peggi’s Donair 02.28.11

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Congratulations to Elisa and Willetta! This contest is now closed.

After relocating from their downtown Chilliwack location almost two years ago, Peggi’s Donair has been serving up delicious East Coast style donairs on Vedder Road ever since. With the colorful mural on the outside of the building that depicts a mix of West Coast and East Coast lifestyles, you can’t miss it!

Peggi’s Donair is family owned and operated by Peggi and her daughter Jessie (one of the four Jessies). With a background in home care, Peggi has lived in BC since 1989 and always loved this type of food that reminded her of her Nova Scotia home. She came across the opportunity to purchase a donair business in 2005 and from the time the idea had formed and actually came to be, a mere six days had passed. How’s that for answering opportunity’s knock?

Spotlight: Home Grown Foods – 02.21.11

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Potato chips are one of those things that we all hate to love. Their salty goodness, satisfying crunch, mmm… they are a perfect, unhealthy snack. What would you think if we told you we had found a healthy potato chip option? A real potato chip (none of this pressed potato flake business for us snack conniseurs, thank you!) that is not loaded with seven-syllable chemicals.

A small team of locals, lead by Owner & President Sepp Amsler, are the folks behind Naturally Home Grown Foods. Their product is a healthy kettle potato chip, Hardbite Potato Chips! Located in Maple Ridge, this busy potato chip factory is dedicated to sustainability and supporting local. Their potatoes are grown locally, staff lives nearby, bags are sourced locally, too. Whenever they can purchase local, they do so and very little is imported from outside BC for the production of Hardbite Potato Chips.

Spotlight – Little Saigon – 02.14.11

Monday, February 14th, 2011

When people think of Mission, they may not think of authentic Vietnamese food, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at Little Saigon.  Along with that find, you will discover another local gem, the restaurant’s owner, Nghia Tran, or Mike, as many people know him.  Unassuming and friendly, Mike is the type of guy who makes you feel as though you’ve stopped in for dinner at a friend’s place.

After working as a computer technician, and then switching careers in order to help out with the family business, Mike was the main cook in the kitchen at his brother-in-law’s restaurant for over two years. He was more than ready to venture out on his own and did just that with his first Vietnamese restaurant in Mission in 2006.  Nestled in the busy Junction, this restaurant has been thriving ever since and as of last year, is now joined by another restaurant of the same name in the heart of Abbotsford.
