Say Cheese – Pulse Spotlight – 02.01.13
Friday, February 1st, 2013Pulse Spotlight – Dickens Sweets & Museum – 12.15.12
Sunday, December 16th, 2012It seems that traditional British food either excites people (Anyone for Mr. Kipling Cherry Bakewell Tarts?) or bewilders people (Batchelors Mushy Peas… I don’t get it!), depending on which side of the pond you’re from! Being a Canadian with very little British influence, I had never been one to pop into a British import shop “just because,” and it wasn’t until I visited Dickens Sweets that I realized what us non-British folk were missing out on!
Named after the famous writer, Charles Dickens, Anne and Fred Hails first opened the doors of Dickens in September 2000 as a bit of a hobby project. Needing something to keep her busy, Anne decided a sweet shop would be a lovely way to enjoy her love for British sweets and also share them with her community. She originally planned to sell imported sweets in the shop 3 days a week, but Anne and Fred soon found themselves bursting at the seams and needing more space. Within two months of opening shop, they were already expanding to accommodate imported grocery items, in addition to their huge selection of sweet goodies.

Lotusland Vineyards – Pulse Spotlight – 10.24.11
Sunday, October 23rd, 2011Is there anything better than a delectable drink that’s also environmentally friendly? We don’t think so, which is why we can’t get enough of Lotusland and their delicious, organic, local wines. That’s right; Lotusland is an organic vineyard based right here in Abbotsford. In fact, owners Liz and David Avery proudly say it’s the only 100 percent Fraser Valley Winery.
That means all the wines are made from Fraser Valley fruit, and they’re not just talking about grapes. Devil’s Spit, a red wine, is made from blackberries. But of course they have wines made from grapes, too. One of their best sellers is the Girlsrmeaner, a white wine in both dry and off dry, and the Ortega, with fresh citrus aromas. Or, if you feel like a red, they have a selection that includes Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Enigma.

Vedder Mountain Grille – Pulse Spotlight – 10.03.11
Sunday, October 2nd, 2011We don’t know about you, but we take every opportunity we can get to slow things down for a while and take in all life has to offer. Since we can’t just take off on vacation whenever we feel like it, we love to find great places in the Fraser Valley that allow us to relax, even for just a little while.
Close enough for a Sunday drive, but quiet and relaxing enough to make it feel like a mini escape, Vedder Mountain Grille is one of those fabulously relaxing places we speak of! They are cooking up homemade comfort food and it’s just like driving over for a visit at Grandma’s house.
Hard to miss with its bright blue exterior, this sweet Chilliwack restaurant stands out along the main strip in Yarrow.

Big Feast Bistro & Catering – Pulse Spotlight – 09.12.11
Sunday, September 11th, 2011The word feast usually evokes a certain image of medieval villagers “cheers-ing” each other with turkey legs and cups of mead, indulging in a sumptuous overload of food, but for our latest business Owner and Chef, Mike Mulcahy, the word means much, much more. In keeping with the definition of the word, it is a meal shared, usually in celebration. It’s about a celebration of life, of family and friends, and of our extreme fortune to be in a country where food is readily available to us. Welcome to Big Feast Bistro & Catering.
Located on a busy street in Maple Ridge, Big Feast Bistro was opened in the spring of 2010 by Owners and husband/wife team Mike and Stacy Mulcahy.
