Say Cheese – Pulse Spotlight – 02.01.13
Friday, February 1st, 2013Pulse Spotlight – Vanilla Clothing – 01.02.13
Thursday, January 3rd, 2013Vanilla Clothing is a locally owned boutique that now has 3 stores to its name: the newest location in Langley just opened in October 2012, the White Rock location has been open since August 2010 and the original store in Prince George was opened in 2009.
Owner Deanna Whissell lives in Langley but is originally from Prince George and now splits her time between the stores. Though she has an extensive background in Marketing and Sales, Deanna always wanted to open her own store and received the opportunity to do so when her best friend, an entrepreneur, helped her after successfully running her own businesses.
Though their long-term goal didn’t go as planned after her dear friend’s passing in 2011, they shared in the fun of coming up with a name for the business in the initial planning stages. Both ladies considered themselves “foodies” and wanted to draw on vanilla’s world-wide popularity as a flavor and scent in their own company’s name and hoped that it would be just as memorable on a local level.
The goal was (and still is) to bring fashion to the Fraser Valley, with a strong focus on clothing that is age appropriate for women who are 35 and up. The clothing in the store is not only fashionable, but made of good quality. Deanna aims to stock clothes that meet the dressing challenges that women in all stages of life face, from finding breathable fabric for menopausal women to materials that fit well and are wearable for many years.
Vanilla Clothing keeps at least 75% of their clothing and products Canadian designed or made and you will only find one of each size with their newer items. Some of the favorite clothing lines carried in the store include Canadian Designer Frank Lyman and Bryn Walker, a casual West Coast clothing line that suits the lifestyle of many BC women. Another great perk of these stores is the in-house stylist that travels between locations.
Deanna and her team of 12 fabulous employees are actively involved with and supportive of local charities, such as hospice and cancer research, as well as being involved in their communities. They host 2 fashion show fundraisers each year and put on a “Retail Therapy” event, which is a chauffeured wine and boutique tour in the Fraser Valley. Fifteen people can sign up to spend an organized day of shopping, eating, and exploring local stores. Their next Retail Therapy tour will be in February.
Customers can find information on Vanilla Clothing through their website or Facebook page and can sign up to become a Fashionista member, where you will receive information about special events, sales, new arrivals, and much more.

Pulse Spotlight – Dickens Sweets & Museum – 12.15.12
Sunday, December 16th, 2012It seems that traditional British food either excites people (Anyone for Mr. Kipling Cherry Bakewell Tarts?) or bewilders people (Batchelors Mushy Peas… I don’t get it!), depending on which side of the pond you’re from! Being a Canadian with very little British influence, I had never been one to pop into a British import shop “just because,” and it wasn’t until I visited Dickens Sweets that I realized what us non-British folk were missing out on!
Named after the famous writer, Charles Dickens, Anne and Fred Hails first opened the doors of Dickens in September 2000 as a bit of a hobby project. Needing something to keep her busy, Anne decided a sweet shop would be a lovely way to enjoy her love for British sweets and also share them with her community. She originally planned to sell imported sweets in the shop 3 days a week, but Anne and Fred soon found themselves bursting at the seams and needing more space. Within two months of opening shop, they were already expanding to accommodate imported grocery items, in addition to their huge selection of sweet goodies.

Pulse Spotlight – Paper Moon – 11.25.12
Sunday, November 25th, 2012Fort Langley is the perfect place for taking your time to look around and enjoy the unique shops and restaurants. Most of us already know this, but did you also know that it hosts one of the most adorable stores ever? Paper Moon is in the recently renovated strip mall located on Glover Rd and has been there for over 12 years. When I met the store’s Owner, Carrie Davis, it was easy to see where the fun-filled store gets its creative feel from.
Sponsored Spotlight: All in Order Suites
Sunday, November 18th, 2012Turn on the evening news any day and you are sure to see strangers whose homes have been damaged from flooding, fire, wind or some other force of nature. What a terrible situation to deal with. Not only the mess, but the loss and inconvenience of having to relocate.
One of the first tasks at hand after a disaster is ‘where will we go?’. All In Order Suites is a fantastic local alternative to staying in a hotel when you are forced from your home by the unimaginable.
Owner/Manager Donna Francis began this venture in 2009 as a furnished apartment rental company. But it wasn’t just executives knocking at her door, it was insurance companies. They were interested in offering these accommodations to their claimants who needed a temporary residence. Donna explored this option further and are now fully set up to work with all insurance companies – often with direct billing, meaning no out-of-pocket expenses for you!
All In Order Suites are primarily located in the Langley and Surrey area. However, if you are seeking accommodations elsewhere in the Fraser Valley, Donna and her team will work alongside furnished rental affiliates to help find you the perfect location.
The comfortable, spacious suites are fully furnished, including everything from linens to cutlery and cleaning products…even a hair dryer! All you need to bring along is your clothing and personal effects – everything else is provided! All In Order Suites include high speed internet access, heat, hydro and full kitchens.
Hopefully most reading this won’t have to call on Donna anytime soon but it’s great to tuck this little piece of information in your hat because, hey, it could happen to you. All In Order Suites offer the creature comforts of home, making temporary relocation a little bit easier on you and your family.
These suites also make fantastic accommodations during home renovations, or for out of town corporate visitors on an extended stay.
