DOXA Documentary Film Festival

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

The 12th Annual DOXA Documentary Film Festival begins this weekend in Vancouver. With seventy-four screenings in five different venues, one of these fantastic documentary films is sure to catch your interest and fit into your schedule!

Please check out their schedule and see what might grab your attention. These films are always so interesting and well done – I hope you’re able to check one out this year!

Here are just a couple of the film synopses, the opening and closing events:

DOXA is extremely proud to open the festival this year with Vancouver director Corey Ogilvie’s Occupy The Movie, a film that exemplifies and expands the feisty tradition of documentaries such as The Corporation and The Take. Although the Occupy movement grew like lightning all over the globe, it had its origins right here in Vancouver. Following the example established by the protestors in New York, encampments sprang up around the globe, a series of brush fires that threatened to engulf the world. Interviews with Chris Hedges, Cornwel West, and Adbuster’s Kalle Lasn add intellectual heft. But it is ordinary people who describe the personal cost of putting their bodies on the front line of social change that speak the loudest.

and

Back in the early 60s, a group of four young men performed in a low rent club called the Cavern. A seventeen-year old girl named Freda Kelly came to almost every performance. This is how Freda Kelly came to work with John, Paul, George and Ringo, a group of Liverpudlian lads who would become a group called The Beatles. As the band’s personal secretary she was along for the wild ride as Beatlemania reached epic heights. In Ryan White’s warm and sweetly humble film, Freda tells her stories for the first time. On the 50th Anniversary of the very first Beatles’ album (Introducing the Beatles) DOXA is happy to celebrate with Good Ol’ Freda, the woman behind the fab four.

While they all sound fantastic, I think this year I’m going to check out Rent a Family Inc. and The Mosou Sisters.

Extra Helping Food Drive™

Sunday, April 21st, 2013
Charitable giving generally isn’t top of mind this time of year, but with an average of 96,000 individuals, 29.5 per cent of whom are children, relying on food banks in British Columbia each month, donations continue to be critical this spring.

From April 19 – May 9, 2013, Real Canadian Superstore®,  nofrills® and Extra Foods® locations in B.C. (and across Canada) are holding their annual spring Extra Helping™ Food Drive.

Extra Helping Food Drive

How can you help? You can help your local food bank by purchasing or bringing nutritious, non-perishable food items to put in the Extra Helping™  donation bins in the stores. You may also make a cash donation at check out. One hundred per cent of the food raised in the community stays with the local community food banks.

When you are shopping at one of these stores, you will see this sticker on some shelves. This indicates a ‘most needed’ item at the local food banks.

Extra Helping logo_English

Here is a list of their most needed items:

  • canned fish/meat
  • natural peanut butter
  • whole wheat pasta and rice
  • pasta sauce
  • beans and legumes
  • low sodium meals in a can (hearty soups, stews, chili, etc.)
  • canned fruit and vegetables
  • whole grain/low sugar cereal
  • baby food, formula and supplies (diapers, etc.)

Every donation is helpful, whether it’s one extra jar of pasta sauce you can afford to add to your weekly grocery list, or several of the above items. Every contribution means a meal for someone in your community who needs a helping hand. Thanks for considering donating to this program.

Vancouver Lego Games: Win Tickets

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

What a fun event! When I was a kid, my brother and I were Lego-crazed. I would have gone bonkers to attend something like this!

vancouver-lego-games-logo

As part of a class project, five students from UBC decided to organize a charity Lego building event. The Vancouver Lego Games will benefit Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and will be the world’s largest charity Lego building event. So cool.

The event takes place April 28th from 2PM – 4PM at the Firefighter’s Club in Burnaby. 300 participants are expected.

Competitors have two ways to participate:

Ready, Set, Build!

Vancouver Lego Games will provide bricks for each person in which a theme will be announced and they will have 15 minutes to create a unique creation to go along with that theme. Judges will then choose the winner from each age category. Prizes will be awarded.

My Own Creation

Competitors are asked to bring a unique creation (no exact sets) to showcase their unique Lego building skills. We simply ask that the creation fit in a space that is 12″ x 12″ so that pieces can be displayed properly.

Competitors will be judged according to these age groupings:

5 to 6 years old
7 to 8 years old
9 to 10 years old
11 to 12 years old
13 to 18 years old
Adult

For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit their website at www.vancouverlegogames.com.

We have 1 adult competitor pass and 1 youth competitor pass to give away to a couple of our lucky readers. Parents, you can of course enter for your kiddos to win the youth pass. Please leave a note below, indicating which pass you’d like to win, to enter to win. Two winners will be chosen at random on March 25, 2013.

Pink Shirt Day 2013

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

image003February 27, 2013 is CKNW’s Pink Shirt Day. This day supports the CKNW Orphan’s Fund and Boys and Girls Clubs in communities across Western Canada.

London Drugs, a key sponsor for this annual event, is once again selling Pink Shirt Day T-shirts for $9.80. They are available in adult and youth sizes from small to XXL. Over the past six years, London Drugs has helped raise more than $330,000 through the Pink Shirt Day Campaign.

About the CKNW Orphans’ Fund Pink Shirt Day: CKNW started Pink Shirt Day six years ago following an anti-bullying stand of two grade 12 Nova Scotia students. The students took action after witnessing a grade 9 student being bullied for wearing pink to school and encouraged their schoolmates to wear pink to send a message against bullying. Since then, CKNW’s Pink Shirt Day Campaign has sent a powerful message that Bullying Stops Here and we should Make Some Noise Against Bullying. In Canada, every seven minutes someone is bullied on a playground in Canada (www.bullying.org). Bullying is demoralizing, wrecks self-esteem and has led to shootings and suicides in Canada. Bullying happens in many different forms but its purpose is to make someone else feel bad on purpose. Through awareness and education Canadians can continue to take a stand against bullying.

There are several London Drugs locations in the Fraser Valley. Click here to find the location closest to you.

Sunday, September 2 at 1pm and 5pm

Take a look at some of these great photos (credit: CirqueDuSoleil.com) – it’s going to be a fabulous show!

Our review:

Having seen previous Cirque du Soleil shows in more permanent production arenas (like Las Vegas), I was very excited about having the opportunity to see one of their breathtaking performances right here in the Fraser Valley!

When I think of Cirque du Soleil, I see daring acrobatic moves, outrageous circus themed costumes and incredible music. I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only does Quidam entertain with all of these elements, but a heavily layered storyline as well. Through the use of hauntingly beautiful music (played live just behind the performance area), elaborate lighting and whimsical makeup, we are transported to an eery imaginative world that amazes and delights!

As one of Cirque du Soleil’s darker performances, the show begins by introducing us to little Zoe and her disconnected parents. To cope with her feelings of neglect and boredom, Zoe embraces her interactions with a faceless passer-by and enters into her own world of imagination looking for wonderment and excitement – which she most certainly finds!

Throughout the performance one follows little Zoe, and her guide Target, as they move through the different stages of her imagination.  The Diabolos performance, (also known as the Chinese Yo-Yo) was exceptional. Who knew that it was even possible to toss a wooden spool into the air, do a few back flips and then catch it using only a piece of string?! The aerial contortion in silk is a dramatic display of ability as well, in which most of it takes place near the roof of the arena. A slight warning here though: some may find her outfit to be rather risqué!

If you decide that your children are old enough to attend to the show (given the darker nature and symbolism that is present throughout), they will absolutely love the skipping rope act! Even as an adult, this act will take you back to your childhood days of playing double dutch in the driveway… although, what we probably did as children never looked like this! Combining dance, acrobatics and, as Cirque calls it, “the art of manipulation” prepare to be amazed as a group of 20 acrobats take to the stage with multiple skipping ropes in a choreographed playground. I especially loved the layered trick in which they were jumping rope inside a bigger rope, inside an even bigger one!

I found that the show picked up speed after the intermission. My favourites were the Spanish webs, the cloud swing and the Banquine performance. Of particular note is the statue act, where two performers move together in nearly impossible balancing acts in a steady flow, despite the dramatic music playing in the background. It was a beautiful performance that displayed the beauty, strength and ability that the human body is capable of.

What I loved most about this particular Cirque du Soleil performance was the manner in which it transitioned from act to act. As the acrobatic performances came to a close, we were brought back to the bigger story. Symbolism is plentiful throughout this performance and avid Cirque du Soleil goers will appreciate the small touches, such as the heavy use of red and the reoccurrence of balloons, which help this show stand out from the others.

Finally, what is a Cirque du Soleil show without a few laughs? The crowd absolutely adored “The Clown” and John characters, who cracked everyone up with their ridiculous ideas and feeble attempts at the bigger tricks. There is tons of audience participation in this show, so if you are lucky enough to snag a floor seat to this show – be prepared! From taking an unsuspecting young woman on a date in his imaginary car, to filming a movie about a love triangle, The Clown’s intermissions are the perfect way to balance out the overall dramatic tone of the show.
