West Coast Women’s Show Events

Friday, October 19th, 2012

With so many things to see and do here at the West Coast Women’s Show, it can be hard to know where you should be, and when!  Stay tuned to our live blog to check out some of the highlights happening on each of the stages!

Here is a schedule of what’s happening on each of the stages: Main StageSpotlight StageKitchen TheatreHealth & Wellness Stage.

Show highlights this year include appearances by Michael Muhney, from The Young & The Restless, Jillian Harris and Wes Hayden, contestants of the Bachelor, best selling author (and wife to Dr. Oz), Lisa Oz, and of course, plenty of action from the 2013 Fire Fighter’s Hall of Fame!

Fire Fighter Chef Show – Kitchen Stage

We kicked off the show with the Fire Fighter Chef show over on the kitchen stage, where Mr. June & Mr. October were cooking up a storm with Fraser Valley’s own Chef Dez! Of course, things got heated while they were prepping for the ingredients for their Thai Chicken Salad, and Mr. June spent most of the demonstration with more than a few buttons missing from his shirt! Good looking, and good in the kitchen, they offered up a few good tips like making sure not to overcook your rice noodles, use sesame oil instead of olive oil for Thai dressings, and keep coconut milk or butter on hand in case your sauce ends up a little too spicy! See it again Saturday at 5:00pm, and Sunday at 1:30pm!

Abbotsford Dance Centre

Opening for the Fashion Forward Fashion Show all weekend, the ladies and young girls from the Abbotsford Dance Centre have some incredible talent!

The Suede Dogs also performed a few jazzy tunes just before the fashion show began!

Fashion Foward Fashion Show

The West Coast Fashion Show isn’t complete without their annual Fashion Forward Fashion Show! Showcasing trendy and stylish outfits for women (and men & children!) of all ages, it’ll make you want to rework your closet… or just go shopping! All outfits are styled from retail outlets within the Seven Oaks Shopping Mall, including Le Chateau, Suzy Sheer, Sirens, Ultima and more! Kiddie outfits seen on the runway can be found at Frog’s Hollow, located in Langley.

And what’s a fashion show in 2012 without a little bit of Gangnam Style?

Calendar Fire Fighters Fashion Show

There wasn’t a whole lot of “fashion” going on with this hotties on stage – but none of the ladies seemed to mind! The main stage area was packed as the 2013 Calendar Fire Fighters strutted their stuff in their official uniforms, turnout gear, and their underwear! Hosted by Ronnie Negus from the Real Housewives of Vancouver, this years’ firemen show was full of laughs, crowd involvement and many happy women!  They are on site all weekend selling their calendars to raise money for the Burn Fund another other local charities. Be sure to come by Saturday evening at 7:30pm to check out the 911 Fashion Show.

Agape Bridal Fashion Show – Main Stage

The boys were at it again on Saturday night and strutting their stuff like nobodies business! Like the Calendar Fire Fighters show on Friday night, the boys were wildly entertaining, showing off their strength and goofy personalities. We seen them in their official uniforms, their p.j.s and their turnout gear – and they looked good! This show also had paramedics models, as well as many of the famous calendar fire fighters.

Vendors & Things to do at the 2012 West Coast Women’s Show

Friday, October 19th, 2012

Here are some great companies that you will find at the 2012 West Coast Women’s Show!

Monkey Butter  - The Gourmet Peanut Butter Company
We caught up with this company last holiday season at a trade show in Vancouver. Stoked to see them here! If you like peanut butter, you must check out Monkey Butter! Dark chocolate banana… maple bacon… oh, yes!

Winks Home Garden and Gifts
Winks Home Garden and Gifts is a darling gift shop in Chilliwack. Their booth has all kinds of pretty things including jewelry, home decor, special baby gifts and Christmas decor/gifts. Pick up something beautiful for yourself or start your holiday shopping! Mennonite Girls Can Cook cookbooks are on sale in this booth as well – a wonderful local cookbook that will have your mouth watering as soon as you crack it open.

Ace Curries To Go
This booth is one of our favourites to see each year. Ace Curries To Go offers Indian spices, kits and all kinds of seasonings to make your Fall and Winter cooking easy peasy!  Catch Ace Curries’ Vick on the Kitchen Theatre Stage this weekend!

LacQit
Have you ever seen how many steps those at-home gel nail kits have? Around 15 – takes forever and we can’t be bothered… until now! LacQit is a great gel nail polish kit that is super simple to use. Just paint on your colour, apply the specially formulated top gel coat, put your hand under the UV light for a quick pop and bam! Perfect gel nails that look like you’ve just wandered out of a salon! We love this.

CheeCha Puffs
Ever tried a CheeCha Puff? These low calorie, gluten free snackies are one of our new favourite treats. The savoury blends are a perfect anytime snack and the cinnamon ones taste just like mini donuts – without the guilt! Fantastic show pricing on, too. Find them in the food section at the West Coast Women’s Show.

Simply Delish Soup and Salad
If you were a frequent local farmers market visitor this summer, you may already be familiar with this company. Tasty, healthy soup packs from Simply Delish Soup and Salad! They have such a great variety and they make eating healthy a breeze!

Suman’s Beauty & Bride
The beautiful ladies from Suman’s Beauty & Bride are offering eyebrow threading ($5) and mehndi/henna art ($5-$10/hand) at their booth all weekend long. It’s one of the first booths we visited and our eyebrows are now fabulously trimmed and shaped! Have you ever tried threading? We love it.

Lee’s Fine Jewellery
A popular booth at the West Coast Women’s Show is Abbotsford’s Lee’s Fine Jewellery. Take a look at some of their exquisite jewellery pieces and take a shot at their scoop and win game. Each guest is allowed one scoop and sift per day. Simply scoop a spoonful into the sieve and hope for the best. We tried it today and won an amethyst! Thousands of dollars worth of jewellery is added to the box each day. Good luck!

Dressed N’ Case
What a genius idea! Kimberly Rosa is the genius behind this great invention… a dress that folds up into a bag. Simple concept, great product. Fun, vibrant patterns available. Pick one up for your winter vacation???

Matt & Steve’s Extreme Bean is a must see. These little green goodies are a treat for your tastebuds!

ChocoVine is here! Dutch chocolate and fine red wine. Need we say  more?

Langley’s Checker’s Premium Fudge is here. Not only are they handing out samples of their amazing fudge flavours all day long (YUM), they are also donating $0.25 of every fudge sale to the cancer society.

We really enjoy A Good Portion – Pistachios & Other Goodies!

Rowena’s Inn on the River & Sandpiper Golf Course are here! This place is so very special – click here to check out our visit to Rowena’s!

Hardbite is here and they are sampling their yummy-in-the-tummy kettle cooked chips! We featured this awesome local company in 2011. They since have a fantastic new and improved look!

Happiness Is… Magical Costumes for Kids is here, with a plethora of beautiful handmade fairy and princess accessories, Rapunzel hair, tutus and doll tents!

Happy Feet is here and we love them! These insoles slip in and out of whichever shoes you’d like to use them in, and make you feel like you’re floating on air!

Krinos Feta Cheese is here and they are sampling their goat and sheep feta cheeses!  Neat booth!

Tourism Kamloops is here along with Pixstar Photobooth Rentals, and they’re ready to take photos of your smiling faces!

The Greater Vancouver Zoo is here and they brought their friends!

Sony has a great booth set up for relaxing in! It’s a big show and with so much shopping, you’re going to need a little break!

There are hundreds of fantastic vendors at this year’s show; this is just a few of the ones we loved. Which vendors did you find at this year’s show?

2012 Cloverdale Rodeo – 1st Annual Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-Off

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

This year, the Cloverdale Rodeo is celebrating the launch of their 1st Annual Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-off and we were so happy to be asked to be a part of it! Today was the official kick-off of the competition and with it we seen the judging of the pie, chili and bacon divisions, with contestants travelling from as far as Texas to compete.

Fraser Valley Pulse Visits the Cloverdale Rodeo

As a guest judge for the CASI Pacific Pod Chili Competition, I have to admit I was a little intimidated – I’ve never judged a chili competition before! Lucky for us, the head judge did a really great job in explaining the ins and outs of the chili basics, so we knew exactly what we were looking for. We covered colour (the best chilis resemble a brick red colour), texture, consistency, smell and taste of course! We tried chilis that tasted spicy, chilis that tasted like curry, and chillis that were so delicious that we wanted to eat the whole bowl!

The Mystery Chili's Ready to be Judged

After 13 chili tasters, handfuls of saltine crackers (to cleanse the palette between tastings), and a whole bottle of water, I can say that I’m now fairly confident in my chili tasting abilities! We had a blast learning all about the different flavours present in each dish, different techniques and how the chunks of meat are really the only chunks that should be noticeable in a chili. I always make mine with mushrooms, but I won’t be anymore!

Fraser Valley Pulse Visits the Cloverdale Rodeo

The Winning Chili from Spud Griffin (all the way from Texas)

Check out the judging area tomorrow (located near the first aid station and the entrance to the midway) to be a spectator as they judge the ultra-competitive pork shoulder, brisket, chicken and rib competitions. Unlike the chili competition, these judges must actually be certified (and specially trained) BBQ tasting judges. It’s serious business! We found great signs like this one throughout the BBQ designated area letting people know how they can get involved in BBQ tasting (and locally too).

Become a Certified BBQ Judge at Well Seasoned in Langley!

After we finished our judging, we submitted our confidential reports (there were strict rules for discussing anything chili related while tasting), and then made our way over to the main entertainment stage to await the announcement of the winners. Prize ribbons were awarded to the top 10 contestants, as they counted down to the first place winner.

Fraser Valley Pulse Visits the Cloverdale Rodeo

After we were finished judging, we heard rumours of a chili submission from a travelling BBQ’er all the way from Texas. Because everything is marked in numbered codes, we had no idea which one this was – but we assumed it was one of the more awesome tasting ones! We assumed right, as Spud Griffin from Texas was crowned the King of Chili during the awards ceremony!

Congratulations Spud on a job extremely well done!

Live Blog: Fraser Valley Women’s Expo – What’s On

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

If you are planning to stop by the 2012 Fraser Valley Women’s Expo this weekend, be sure to check out this stage schedule. The stage is a busy place this weekend, with everything from fashion shows to cake decorating. Here’s some of the fun we have captured so far at this exciting event!

Gente Bella Hair Show

Saturday morning Gente Bella Salon & Spa put on an incredible hair demonstration for all sorts of braids, updos and punk rock styles! Students of the Gente Bella Beauty Academy showed off their skills by completing up to 3 different hair styles in less than 30 minutes. Creating cool hair styles that fast in front of a crowd of people? Now that’s talent!

DIY Wedding Tips

Magna Goerke from DIY Wedding Resource shared her best tips and tricks for planning your own wedding. She taught us that wedding planners aren’t always necessary if you stay focused on what your are doing! Her best tips? Keep all your information together in one place, and manage your expectations! Our biggest disappointments occur when our expectations do not match our realities. Just starting to plan your wedding? Magna says to focus on the Big 4: Date, Guest List, Venue & Budget to get your wedding planning off to a good start!

Newlove Decor & Design

Keeping with the wedding theme, Erin Newlove from Newlove Decor & Design took the stage next to teach us all about wedding decor & new trends that are popping up in the 2012 wedding season. She encourages couples to really make their wedding their own, and bring in unique ideas that really display their personalities. Great creative with favours (consider using homemade jams, salsas, recipes on spoons, etc),  get whimsical centerpieces (bring in natural elements like wild flowers instead of formal arrangements, mismatch vases, etc) and don’t be afraid to mix styles! Vintage styles are very trendy right now, with lots of opportunities to mix and match items to create a nostalgic feel. Best tips to keep things affordable? Don’t be afraid to shop sample sales, wedding swaps and craigslist to find any decor & accessory items you may need.

Kick Ass Cakes

Who wants to learn how to decorate cakes like a pro? We do! We do!  Natasha from Kick Ass Cakes took the stage to demonstrate how to use fondant on your homemade cakes to really make them pop. Even though she put on a fantastic demonstration, I think it will be a while before we are making incredible cakes like she does! Her best tips? Make sure to work quickly with fondant and gum paste and be sure to return it to their containers when not in use to keep it ready to use for the next time!

Passionate Home – Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Presentation

Shabby chic style is all the rage when it comes to home decor, and Carrie from The Passionate Home is an expert! During her presentation, Carrie demonstrated how easy it can be to refinish and distress furniture using Annie Sloan chalk paint (now available for purchase at the Passionate Home). Lucky for us, using it is as easy as painting on, letting it dry and rubbing with a damp cloth! No icky smells and no mess means you don’t need a garage to give your old dresser a facelift! Visit the Passionate Home’s website to learn more about this amazing product!

Hudson Madison Design Team

We loved the Hudson Madison Design Team’s spring time decoration ideas and pointers on how to bring the outside in! Whether your style is glam, natural or eclectic they recommend keeping that style in mind 90% of the time to keep everything pulled together. The other 10% of the time – have fun! It’s the accessories that tend to be the most memorable and make your room, well, yours!
