Gals

To Thread or Not To Thread…

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Let’s be honest with each other.  There is nothing enjoyable about removing hair from our bodies.  No matter how painless some people claim it is, it still hurts.  In general, I think most women deserve a Wonder Woman award just for the amazing things they do in their daily lives.  Have a successful job?  Check!  Raise a family? Check!  Juggle schedules, cook, clean and maintain close friendships?  Quadruple check!   I also think that women deserve a beauty grooming award for the time, money and most of all, pain that they endure for some beauty treatments.

I’ll admit, I had heard of threading from a number of friends prior to my adventure into a salon to actually get it done.  I was scared, hesitant and curious all at once.

The holiday season is definitely here and with it comes a multitude of soirees, galas and work parties to dress up for.  It’s sad how few occasions we get to go “all out” with our hair, makeup, and clothing.  Christmas, however, is definitely one of those times.

Day to Night Makeup

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

When I head out for the day, it’s rare that I bring makeup with me for re-application. I guess I’m the type of person that believes that if your makeup is applied well at the start of the day and with quality products, there should be little reason or need to re-apply it later on.  Gym workouts, sudden downpours and pies in the face excluded, your makeup should stay put.

But when you finish your work day and start to turn your attention to your evening plans, it’s a great time to turn up the va va voom on your existing makeup with a few, fairly simple upgrades.  This is where a mini makeup kit in your purse definitely comes in handy.

Now I say all this assuming that you took a little time at the start of your day to apply a clean and fresh daytime look.  I don’t consider myself to be a “chipper” morning person, but I do make the time to apply some makeup before I leave for work.  It helps me feel polished, pretty and professional.

Embrace Bathing Suit Shopping This Year!

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Is there anyone who likes bathing suit shopping?  If you have a “perfect” body and no qualms about parading it in a skintight barely-there suit, then congratulations to you.

If, however, you find yourself in the same boat as the rest of us mere mortals when it comes to bathing suits, then I have a proposal for you.  You know all the years you’ve spent cringing when you think about having to expose your bod in the heat of summer?  Well, this is the year to take back the lakes!  Take back the beaches, the backyards, the swimming pools! Take back the carefree years of not thinking about what your body looks like, but what it can do!  And I’m going to tell you 3 things that will help you find the joy in bathing suits again!

Fresh Ideas For Mother’s Day

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

It’s almost Mother’s Day again.  Time for the brunches and teas and flowers… or IS it?  This year I find myself a little tired of the same old, same old.  Don’t get me wrong, if your Mom looks forward to her yearly special brunch and flower bouquet, do NOT disappoint her!  We have deliciously scrumptious brunches happening in the FV this year (check FVP’s event calendar). But if maybe, just maybe, she’s someone who might like something out of the ordinary, we’ve put a list together of alternative Mother’s Day ideas that will WOW your Mom.

Interview: Chef Dez – Valentine’s Day At Home

Monday, February 1st, 2010

For those who want to enjoy a quiet, romantic dinner at home this Valentine’s Day, we asked Fraser Valley’s Chef Gordon Desormeaux for some tips. Better known as Chef Dez, you may have read one of his food columns, seen him perform at a local cooking show or taken one of his cooking classes. Since we can’t always hire him as our personal chef to cook for us, we asked his advice on creating a romantic dinner for two at home.

Brianna’s Adventures in Singledom: The Wedding

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Have you ever gone to a wedding, stag?  Until recently, I would have answered no.  I have been in a relationship for most of my adult life, and the few weddings I’ve gone too as a single lady have been with an escort.  I’ve always thought that as far as functions go, a wedding is the one I’d least like to be unaccompanied at.  For starters, the entire event is a celebration of coupledom; not only of the couple saying their vows, but of all couples everywhere, especially those surrounding you for the entire event.  If you don’t believe me, just look around during the toasts. The day will typically start off as a stoic witnessing of  the unalterable tethering of one life to another, then turn into a giddy celebratory atmosphere, but about the time the toasts are being offered to the bride, the groom, the bridesmaids, the groomsmen, the parents…every couple in the room gets very squishy and cuddly.

Fun Find: Bra Bling

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Exploring fabulous local businesses often leads to a ton of fun finds.  At the helm of FVP is a professional personal shopper, who has employed a team of shopaholics (coincidence???), which means we are always on the lookout for the newest/snazziest/cutest bits and pieces.

Last week we came across Bra Bling, a fun bra strap decor/reminder tab.  They are handmade in Maple Ridge by Amber van den Hoven .  Frustrated by forgetting which side she’d last nursed on, she decided to create something pretty rather than the standard safety pin reminder.  ”I’m a blingy kind of girl,” says Amber, “I wanted something girly, fun, and something I could use after nursing.”
