Frugal Fraser Valley Fun: Geocaching

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

We first discovered geocaching a few years back, but only really became interesting/involved in this fun family activity last year. In the time of too many TV shows, video games and computers keeping us indoors, we love this activity that gets the family out of the house, enjoying the fresh air and exercising your inner explorer.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game played worldwide. Using GPS-enabled devices (handheld or even a smartphone with GPS capabilities), users track small containers called geocaches. The GPS leads you to the area of the geocache and that’s when the fun begins! The containers are usually the size of an old film container, up to maybe a large tupperware lunchbox. The caches are hidden in their surroundings – in a tree trunk, under a bench – and players must use their hunting skills to uncover the hidden treasures.

Frugal Fun: Antique Shopping in the Fraser Valley

Monday, February 28th, 2011

If you ever spent time in your grandma’s attic as a child, you are probably familiar with that feeling of excitement when you find something so unique you can’t wait to tell someone about it. Now that we are adults, we spend much less time exploring attics and not nearly enough time getting exciting about finding treasures. This month, recreate a little of that treasure hunting excitement and head out for an afternoon of antiquing and flea market hunting at one (or more!) of the Fraser Valley’s antique store destinations.

The best part of embarking on an antiquing adventure is that it is truly a frugal one. With little to no admission fees and zero pressure to buy anything at all, it makes for a great way to spend a few hours.

Frugal Fun: Easy Recycled Album Gift

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Valentine’s Day has always been one of my favourite holidays. Not only is it a holiday that celebrates love of all kinds, but it also happens to be one of the few holidays where it is actually endearing to gift something handmade!

Regardless of what you might think, you don’t have to be creatively inclined to craft up a thoughtful gift for a loved one. This Valentine’s Day, we’ve put together a tutorial to help you create a frugally fun scrapbook completely from scratch (and for under $15!). With just a few basic supplies, we’ll show you how to create a one-of-a-kind mini album for you to document memories, share photos, and let that special someone know how much they meant to you.

Frugal Fun: Games Night In

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Social events certainly have a tendency of adding up quickly, especially if you enjoy regular evenings out with family and friends. Spending time with people you love is important, but if you aren’t careful, regular nights out on the town (wherever your destination) could leave you running short on your grocery money. Since this isn’t good for anyone, we’ve come up with a great Frugal Fun idea to help you continue being a social butterfly, without breaking the bank – plan a game night in! When’s the last time you took part in a game of Twister? We think however long ago it was – it was too long ago!

Not like they used to be, board games have changed a lot over the years. With the number of great party games on the market these days, a games night in is the perfect combination of casual dinner party interaction, laughter and a little dose of healthy competition.

As we know from last week’s Pulse Spotlight, the Fraser Valley is filled with incredibly talented artists!
