Fraser Valley Hot Yoga

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

While yoga has been around for quite a while, it has risen as a popular workout trend in the last few years, appealing to a mainstream group of spiritually-minded individuals and athletes alike.  It has become a regular fixture on class schedules from fitness gyms to recreation centers and private yoga studios have popped up in many neighborhoods.

Yoga is a great complement to other high impact sports and exercises.  It allows you to stretch, tone and challenge your body in ways you might not be able to otherwise.  Through yoga, you can learn methods to calm the mind, release muscle tightness, build core strength and focus on proper alignment of the body, among other benefits.

Hot yoga has become widely popular as many people like the benefit of warmed muscles from the heated room.  I have to say the warmth suits me well as I don’t consider myself to be a very flexible person.  Oh, and the warm room also feels like a mini vacation to Mexico.  You can’t go wrong with that, right?

I’ve been going to yoga for a few years now, but hot yoga is somewhat new in my world and it wasn’t until I recently tried a few different classes that I really learned what separates one type from the other.  Most of the hot yoga classes I had been to were a standard yoga style, such as Hatha, in a heated room. The room is usually between 25° – 30° Celsius to start, with the source of heat coming from heat lamps or infrared heat.  Generally, the postures practiced in each class are different from one to the next and the class length ranges from 45 – 60 minutes.

To mix things up, I thought I’d try Bikram yoga, which is practiced in a room where the temperature begins at 41° Celsius, is 90 minutes long and the same twenty-six postures are practiced each class.  While I prepared myself physically by drinking lots of water to stay hydrated, I wasn’t prepared for the mass amounts of sweat and mental challenge of this class.  My first clue of what to expect should have been the groups of people sitting outside the yoga room, dripping in sweat in their barely-there workout gear.  These people were red-faced, sweating, and looking like they had just been chased by a Lion in the desert.  I instantly knew I was overdressed.

Once in the studio, I let my body adjust to the heat and carefully placed my towel beneath me.  The instructor barked the directions for each pose as we followed along like a sweaty batch of Gumby dolls.  There is a lot of focus on proper alignment and it was helpful to have the teacher provide slight tweaks or suggestions throughout the class.  I managed to make it through the class without passing out, and physically pushed myself further than I thought I could go.  I was exhausted, mentally beat and not sure I could do another class.

Somehow, I made it through a few more classes, but have since returned to my “regular” hot yoga class and love it even more than before.  After stepping out of my comfort zone to try something new, I learned that a) you have to enjoy the form of exercise that you choose to do or you won’t stick to it b) you are capable of more than you know and c) unless you try, you won’t know if it’s for you.  So what are you waiting for?

2012 Cloverdale Rodeo – 1st Annual Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-Off

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

This year, the Cloverdale Rodeo is celebrating the launch of their 1st Annual Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-off and we were so happy to be asked to be a part of it! Today was the official kick-off of the competition and with it we seen the judging of the pie, chili and bacon divisions, with contestants travelling from as far as Texas to compete.

As a guest judge for the CASI Pacific Pod Chili Competition, I have to admit I was a little intimidated – I’ve never judged a chili competition before! Lucky for us, the head judge did a really great job in explaining the ins and outs of the chili basics, so we knew exactly what we were looking for. We covered colour (the best chilis resemble a brick red colour), texture, consistency, smell and taste of course! We tried chilis that tasted spicy, chilis that tasted like curry, and chillis that were so delicious that we wanted to eat the whole bowl!

The Mystery Chili's Ready to be Judged

After 13 chili tasters, handfuls of saltine crackers (to cleanse the palette between tastings), and a whole bottle of water, I can say that I’m now fairly confident in my chili tasting abilities! We had a blast learning all about the different flavours present in each dish, different techniques and how the chunks of meat are really the only chunks that should be noticeable in a chili. I always make mine with mushrooms, but I won’t be anymore!

The Winning Chili from Spud Griffin (all the way from Texas)

Check out the judging area tomorrow (located near the first aid station and the entrance to the midway) to be a spectator as they judge the ultra-competitive pork shoulder, brisket, chicken and rib competitions. Unlike the chili competition, these judges must actually be certified (and specially trained) BBQ tasting judges. It’s serious business! We found great signs like this one throughout the BBQ designated area letting people know how they can get involved in BBQ tasting (and locally too).

After we finished our judging, we submitted our confidential reports (there were strict rules for discussing anything chili related while tasting), and then made our way over to the main entertainment stage to await the announcement of the winners. Prize ribbons were awarded to the top 10 contestants, as they counted down to the first place winner.

After we were finished judging, we heard rumours of a chili submission from a travelling BBQ’er all the way from Texas. Because everything is marked in numbered codes, we had no idea which one this was – but we assumed it was one of the more awesome tasting ones! We assumed right, as Spud Griffin from Texas was crowned the King of Chili during the awards ceremony!

Congratulations Spud on a job extremely well done!

5 Great Gardening Tips for the Not-So-Green Thumbed

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

We recently got the chance to sit down with Brian Minter, from Minter Gardens & The Country Garden Store for the inside scoop on how to make it look like you know what you’re doing in the garden! If you’re anything like me, gardening can be wee bit scary because I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve spent many hours wandering the garden aisles at home improvement stores, trying to decide which planters to get, which soil to use and which plants to buy. I felt a bit silly asking for help for what seemed like really simple gardening. I’d end up making purchases, heading home, trying to get through it and then throwing out my wilted plants a few weeks later.

Frugal Fun – Fraser Valley Consignment Stores

Monday, May 7th, 2012

So, as I find myself seven months pregnant and in need of a whole new summer wardrobe (or so it seems), I have been introduced to the wonderful world of consignment stores. Although I’m always up for a good deal, I had never really taken the time to explore all the great consignment shops that are right in my own backyard! These great bargain boutiques have both the potential to find amazing clothes at hugely discounted prices and the opportunity for you to consign your own clothing, accessories and shoes when you’re done with them (provided they are in good, clean, resellable condition). A win for all involved!

Below is a list of a few consignment stores in the Fraser Valley. Some of these carry children’s or men’s clothes too, but for this feature I’ve focused on women’s clothing. I’m pretty sure you’ll be seeing a children’s consignment store post from yours truly in the future!

Fraser Valley Women's Expo - Unika

1. DD Booski
106 – 23343 Mavis Avenue, Fort Langley

I’ve been shopping at d.d. booski for years now. This is not just a consignment store, though, they also carry lots of new items at affordable prices. How? Much of it is department store overstocks and the such. It’s a great place to visit, whether you are in need of something special or just fancy a browse. And, heck, it’s a trip to Fort Langley which is always fun! Click here to learn more about their consignment policy.

2. Unika
102 – 5658 Vedder Road, Chilliwack

Unika – a lifestyle company is a really, really neat store. They describe their store as a modern blend of new, almost new and vintage clothing, accessories, jewelry and home decor. If you are the type of person who likes to have that one-of-a-kind shirt/dress/outfit that everybody adores and nobody else has, Unika is for you. Click here to learn more about their consignment policy.

3. Clothesline Consignment
5685 176 Street, Surrey (Cloverdale)

Cloverdale’s Clothesline Consignment was the first consignment store I ever visited – and it set the bar high. The store is packed from wall to wall with fashions for women of all ages, great accessories – even shoes! And it’s all at a fraction of what you would have paid for the garments when they were new. The store is merchandised nicely and though it’s not a huge store, you’ll be in there for quite some time looking through racks and racks of great finds. Click here to learn more about their consignment policy.

4. Crazy About Clothes
11952 228 Street, Maple Ridge

Maple Ridge’s Crazy About Clothes boasts an ‘upscale’ consignment collection, and it didn’t disappoint. Designer fashions, like-new brand name handbags – they have it all. The store is stocked full of awesome fashions and they host regular events that look like lots of fun. Click here to learn more about their consignment policy.

5. Klassy Katz Consignment
10 – 32904 Ventura Avenue, Abbotsford

Klassy Katz’ mission statement is “To offer impeccable quality, name brand apparel in an assortment of sizes and styles to accommodate all varying body styles and shapes while providing the best shopping experience available in the world of consignment clothing”. And they have succeeded in their mission, if you ask me. I’ve only just discovered this store but the staff were super helpful, the collection of clothing was diverse and I found some awesome deals! Click here to learn more about their consignment policy.

Bonus #6 – Cashmere & Cupcakes
21594 48 Avenue, Langley

This designer consignment boutique caught my eye recently. Local fashionistas will love this adorable boutique stocked with brand name clothing, jewellery and other accessories.  We’re talking Coach, Gucci, Chanel – real, quality designer finds.

Every week I’m finding more good ones scattered throughout the Fraser Valley. Where is your favourite local consignment store?

If you’re anything like me, you love the look of beautiful garden flowers but you just don’t have the time to get them looking half decent. It probably doesn’t help that my thumb is anything but green and that I don’t really know where to begin when it comes to growing a garden! Lucky for me (and all the other brown-thumbed gardeners out there) these 5 great gardening centres in the Fraser Valley employee folks looking to broaden our gardening knowledge. They are also great for seasoned gardeners who are looking for good quality plants and accessories.
