Interview: Gardening Tips With Arnold Falk

Monday, March 15th, 2010

One of the best things about Spring is the beautiful flowers and vegetation. While there are plenty of pretty plants throughout the Fraser Valley, if you want them in your own backyard it will take a bit of work. With all the plant varieties, weather variables and technical knowledge needed, gardening can be overwhelming.  We asked local nursery owner, Arnold Falk, for advice on gardening in the Fraser Valley climate.

Arnold, his wife, Brenda, and daughter Lauren run a boutique nursery, Tanglebank, located in Abbotsford.

Fresh Spring Dress Fashions

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Most of us here in the Fraser Valley have the t-shirt and jeans look down pat.  I say this because that’s what I see a lot of when I’m out and about in public: ladies wearing t-shirts and jeans (or workout gear, we’re all guilty of that). It’s what I wear when I’m not working.  It’s easy, it’s simple and it requires little effort to buy and to choose from the closet when you’re in a hurry.  But let’s admit it, it’s a boring look.

I’d like to think I can do a little better than that for my everyday wear, I just need a little help pulling looks together.

March 2010: Childcare Worldwide

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Every day over 5,760 more children become orphans.  Every single day.

I sat down with Dan Bue, Executive Director of Childcare Worldwide based in Surrey, to ask what differentiates his organization from other child relief agencies.  “We focus on children, but we also help them as they become adults to get trained for careers to support themselves.  We don’t just drop them when they turn 18, like some other organizations will.”  He went on to talk about the trade school they’ve built for former orphans, and how CW has managed to employ many kids formerly supported by donors to work making clothes for current orphans.

Interview: Spring Organization Tips w/ Janis Nylund

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Spring doesn’t officially start until March 21, but recent weather in the Fraser Valley certainly feels like Spring. The ritual of Spring cleaning began as a way to get rid of smoke residue leftover from wood-burning stoves that burnt all winter. Spring was an ideal time to open the windows and get rid of the dust before it was hot enough that bugs coming in would be a problem.

Although modern heating and vacuums have eliminated the need for cleaning to take place in the Spring, it is a great time to take stock of your possessions and re-organize your house.

Tips For Setting Business Goals

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

As you begin the goal setting process, I recommend making notes that will help keep your thoughts organized and give you something to refer back to. How you write them is up to you; choose what suits your lifestyle and is easy to keep track of.

Evaluate your Needs
In order to plan appropriately, consider where you want to end up. Quite simply, what’s the point? Once you have your overall needs in mind, setting specific goals will help you meet them.
