Summer Hair

Summertime is great for so many reasons… barbeques with friends, amazing fresh fruit, vacations abroad or beach days close to home.  When it comes to taking care of and styling your hair in the summer, it’s hard not to fall flat rather than being fab. My hair is naturally curly and on a humid day, I can actually feel it expand into something resembling a poodle’s fur.  Pretty for a poodle, yes. Pretty for a dinner out with girlfriends, not so much.

Managing the mane and keeping it stylish is one thing, but protecting it in a variety of conditions is another, so we’ve tapped into our resources of experts to give you some great styling tips for the summer.  Lucky for us, these ladies have used a plethora of products over the years and have narrowed down a few favorites to share.

Before you even head out in the sun or surf, you should be thinking about how to protect your hair or hair color the same way that you would think about protecting your skin.  Stacey Wells from Michaud’s Salon and Spa in Cloverdale loves the Redken line of products for personal and salon use.  She suggests saturating your hair with cold water and applying a conditioner before even going in the water.  After you’re done swimming, treat your hair with Redken’s Color Extend Sun After-Sun Shampoo, which removes salt, chlorine and minerals to keep hair color looking healthy and vibrant.

Nobody wants to spend a lot of time doing their hair, especially in the summer.  One of my favorite trends that is both cute and really easy to do is the tried, tested and true braid.  Whether you make a ponytail and braid it or French braid your bangs into the rest of the hair, the possibilities are many and the majority of styles can be done in just a few quick minutes.  Try braiding a small section on each side of your hair and pull it back with a clip or bobby pin.   Enlist help from a friend or relative to do a full French braid or fish braid if you’re not quite sure how to get your fingers working in the right direction.

If you love a wind-blown and beachy look, Katrina from Razor’s Edge Hair Gallery in Abbotsford says that no other styling product compares to Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray.  This product can be worked through damp hair, which can then be left to dry naturally or dried with a diffuser.  You can also use it on dry hair for detailing and to add lift at the roots.

Using styling products such as a defining crème will help to fight frizz and keep hair in place, whether you style a loose updo to keep hair off your neck or if you tie it back into a basic ponytail.  And there’s nothing that says healthy and fresh like an all-new haircut or colour.

Next time you are getting your hair done, ask your stylist for more quick tips or suggestions to help you spend as little time getting ready and as much time enjoying the summer as possible!
