Today we are at the 66th annual Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair! Year after year, locals and visitors look forward to the May long weekend festivities here in Surrey. When we say there is something for everyone, we aren’t kidding! If you’ve never been, fear not. The Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair is on all weekend long – hope to see you here!
Guests will find lots of new events at this year’s rodeo and fair, including the first-ever Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-Off which will put world-renowned BBQ chefs in a mouth-watering competition where they can win $10,000! We were thrilled to be invited to judge one of the events this year – Shannon judged the chili competition today at 2pm. What a blast!
Also new this year is the World Freestyle Round-Up powered by ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK – a skateboard competition with the world’s top freestyle skateboarders from all over the globe. A little early or a little late for the Freestyle Round-Up? Stick around for the Roller Derby which takes place on Saturday and Sunday in the Extreme Sports Centre.
Plus don’t miss millions of dollars in vintage rides nearby at the first-ever Classic Car Show!
This year’s Rodeo
features world champions and Canadian champions competing against some fierce young up-and-comers in four main events: Bareback, Bull Riding, Ladies Barrel Racing and Saddle Bronc. The invitational format continues to draw top names and provides consistently challenging bucking stock. Top pro rodeo contestants in each of the four events will compete for $300,000 in cash prizes – and more importantly – the championship title. If you can’t make it down in person, stay tuned to the live stream
on their website.
The mechanical bull arena provided loads of entertainment as we sat and had a bite to eat in the “refreshment zone.” It’s free to give it a try, and open to rodeo-goers of all ages (little ones need an adul’ts consent of course). Although experienced bull-riders were welcome, we’re pretty sure most of the people giving it a try were bull-riding newbies. It’s a good thing there’s an inflatable floor to soften the blow when you fall (and you will)!
Speaking of food – there is no shortage of that here at the rodeo! We were so happy to see that Pennsylvania Dutch was here with their infamous deep fried Oreos and deep fried Pop Tarts (so delish).
The Kidz Zone, Agri Zone and midway/rides are where we know lots of our readers will be headed this weekend, if you haven’t already been! Tonnes of great rides and skill games fill the midway area, with neat activities like the zipline & Wobbly Water Balls closer to the Kidz Zone. Here is some of the fun we encountered today.
Little ones will love Dinotown in the Kidz Zone and we hear Dora the Explorer has been sighted too! If your little ones like sports, don’t miss the super cute mini hockey arenas and padded basketball courts!
You can’t have a rodeo without animals! Visit the Agri Zone to check out cute and cuddly animals of all sizes, learn a little bit about our dairy industry and get a chance to get up close and personal with a few really unique looking llamas!
Head over to the lumberjack arena to watch live lumberjack performances and live wood carving demonstrations (with a power saw)!
Where to play as the sun goes down? The world-famous Longhorn Saloon
– always a hit with local country music lovers! Ken McCoy and his band will take to the stage, along with Dr. Strangelove, Jaydee Bixby, Bon Jovi Tribute and Nearly Neil.
