Johnny Cash lovers, listen up! Big River, a tribute to Johnny Cash, is coming to Chilliwack Cultural Centre on Friday, August 5th! We have heard that Big River does Johnny Cash better than Johnny Cash!!
This band is North America’s favourite Johnny Cash tribute band and they perform all of the hits spanning five decades of Johnny’s career. David James, who plays Johnny Cash, nails Johnny’s mannerisms and voice perfectly.
I had the chance to speak with David James and I could feel his excitement about the show over the phone. A musician who grew up in Alberta, David was re-inspired to pursue his music after a few sour life circumstances. He watched the movie Walk The Line and noticed several parallels between he and Johnny’s lives. It was at that point that David discovered he could sing just like Johnny Cash.
“A lot of folks think this is going to be a boring, slow show,” David says,” But when we start jumping on speakers and taking the wireless mic for a walk, then they get excited.” It sounds like a high energy performance, with a crew of carefully selected talents to make up this tribute band.
Johnny Cash once said, “You know, performance is communicating. You’ve got to communicate. You’ve got a song you’re singing from your gut; you want that audience to feel it in their gut.” Big River continues to entertain with the same principles, singing all of the Cash songs you know and love including; “I Walk The Line”, “Solitary Man”, “Get Rhythm”, “Folsom Prison”, “Ring of Fire” and more.
